Who. In your opinion has the best avatar on here.
Most avatars don't sit still long enough to take notice. It'd be tough to pick from a constantly changing field.

You might want to consider categories, i.e., funniest, most creative, best of theme, etc.

There's been a bit of a discussion about animated avatars, especially around the time the picture-sigs got switched off, but no previous 'Best Avatar' threads that I've seen.

There was a dancing spiderman avatar a while ago that had me in stitches.
BoogieJuice had one with Che Guavarra playing hacky sack that I quite liked.
Harper's been running an entertaining series of pic-avatars with very appropriately funny titles that I enjoy.
I also preferred John Child's pint of Guiness to the logo.
Catboy's X avatar where the cat appears to steal the cross was probably my favourite.
And Phil's legoman is like a pillar of stabillity and a sanity touchstone.

Duvel is tasty...I buy it from time to time, although I prefer the Chimay Blue over all other beers. The price for Chimay in the US has recently gone up, however, so now it's $10 for one of those large bottles. Still worth it, but I can't justify drinking it as often as I used to. If one adopts the "apple a day" philosophy, that's $70 a week in Chimay. Only a couple months of that and I'd have the KH 29 I'm wanting so bad.

john_childs

Yikes!!

Diamond Knot (http://www.diamondknot.com/) in Mukilteo has an Industrial IPA (http://www.diamondknot.com/beer/indust.htm) that's about 7.5%. A nice beer to try if you're ever in Mukilteo waiting for the ferry. The Diamond Knot Brewery is right by the ferry dock.

The Industrial IPA is certainly not in the league of Chimay and it's not my favorite IPA, but it's still a nice one to try just cause it's a little different.

MrBoogiejuice
2005-11-03, 02:06 PM
I know Chimay well...'tis a fine beer. $10 a bottle is pretty steep though!
I was in Belgium earlier this year, I had a lot of fun tasting all the lovely beers they have.

Still it's a nice avatar.I'm with you. I forgot about it when I made my fav list a couple of posts ago. Avatars with such a personal story are nice.
My previous one (http://www.unicyclist.com/gallery/?g2_view=core.ShowItem&g2_itemId=108961&g2_GALLERYSID=9dc6d9c8f551380978ba98debd1f9e8d)was me on a uni during a solar eclipse.
That wasn't nearly as painfull tho.

I am distraught, upset, and in tears. I went the whole way through the thread and not one of you liked my avatar. Not a single mention. Not an entry in someone's top ten. No clamours of adulation, not even a mild appreciation. My avatar lies way below Lego bricks and Peanuts in popularity, sobbing on the floor, a crumpled damp heap in the corner. Unconsoleable, shoulder shaking grief is racking my entire body. I can't sleep nights, don't even want to get up in the morning. My evenings I spend crying into my beer...well if I drank the stuff I would. :(

I wonder if I should have used the whole painting instead of just a cutout? Perhaps not.

I think I would have greatly enjoyed being the artist's model for the picture. Now, if as I suspect Phil, you know the painting, what does THAT say about me?

( You might prefer not to answer that in too much detail. )

P.S. I'll probably post it for GILD once I work out how to cut and paste it into a post from my c: drive.

Why not? The octopus is a fabulous creature, and does, as I understand it , grow to sizes similar to that. We used to catch ( and release ) small ones as kids in the shallows of the South China Sea.
I would have posed with one quite happily. I really like the artist, highly skilled, even his painting of the bubbles is astonishing.

NaoIf you look as good as the model (I guess you do;) ) you won't have any problem to find an artist who can put you on a painting... well probably less than to find an octopus. :p
Nice painting by the way... It reminds me my role playing game period (it looks like heroic fantasy paintings)

no problem with that: Octopusses have a reputation for purring (yes for real: they love being cuddled : they do not make the noise they just twitch their tentacles). In fact I love octopusses (properly roasted!).
I wrote my comment before getting the whole picture.
My point is about the symbols carried by avatars: some have no symbolic power some really talk to me. For instance I like Mikefule's avatar: when watching it I curiously hear south-american music playing: both sad and joyous. So I am wondering if Mikefule IS actually both sad and joyous...
I found your avatar carrying a "possessive" image so I was wondering if you were an anguished possessive person ... probably not: interpretation of images is a very personal thing. Often one see his own shade when interpreting others :(

Yes, I agree, having chosen an avatar, you must, almost by definition, have put some of your personality into that choice. How much probably varies a lot from person to person and will also greatly reflect how much time was put into making that choice. I did put a fair bit of thought into making my choice, although I wouldn't see possessive as one of my main characters. I admit that anything with 8 arms has to seem a little possessive ( although squid, with 10 arms I think, seem less possessive to me), whether applying these attributes to the unicyclist has any validity may well be pure fantasy. Bit like trying to read someone's stars I guess, but with maybe a little more weight to the results. I think that, like many people, I am too complex a character to be easily pigeonholed. But have fun anyway.
Another thing that inhibits my making any judgement is previous knowledge of the avatar owner. I know what Mike's avatar refers to, and as such that would prevent me from getting any S. American flavour. I would guess that if the avatar is in any way diagnostic, it would work best when new members first join in the fray.
I will look at people's avatars in a new light from now on, but only for entertainment value. I would hate to be seen to get anyone wrong, except in fun.
