Just off the top of my head, I'd say it's a date set where graduates have a chance to return to their alma mater to relive the good ol' days.

For the school, homecoming is usually a festive week leading up to the big game on Friday night, usually football. The kids decorate the town throughout the week, have fun activities in school, i.e., crazy dress up days, contests, etc. There usually is a parade, pep rally, and bonfire. Here, the girls get a chance to wear the guys football or soccer jerseys to school on Friday, then comes the big formal dance on Saturday night.

Lots of fun, lots of school spirit, usually some community shenanigans like tee-peeing houses, eggs, this year paintball guns, and always some arrests. Our house and cars got nailed with paintballs because we had the soccer team parade float in our driveway. During homecoming week, we watch out our window as some of the upperclassmen patrol the streets at night looking for freshmen. There are chases through the neighborhood yards and some freshmen who return to school the next day a bit less naive.

Apart from the few who get out of control, it's a very fun week in which the whole community participates. I've found it's much better in small towns than in the 'burbs as the small town communities seem much more close knit than their suburbanite brethern. Our homecoming was last week, now it's back to the basic rat race of work and school.

Cathy,

Right on the money! The comment was rude, immature and unappreciated especially when directed at two people that I care for very much. But such is life. It takes all kinds to make a world.

Truth is, Ben treated Ashley like the princecess she is the entire evening.

Well... we didnt exactly have homecoming at my school... again, probably an american thing. But It seems a lot like prom. Which is just the final dance for grads, where they get all dressed up etc. Although Ive posted my prom pics before, Ill post again. Theyre getting a little outdated since I graduated 3 years ago... but who cares.

2005-10-13, 10:34 AM
I dressed up in a torn jeans, a mexican poncho, and a 4 foot sombrero for my homecoming senior year. (I didn't bother with the dances the other years) My date was a rubber chicken. A couple of my friends also dressed similarly.

We didn't last long....

The administration of my highschool has some "issues" that we like to protest through harmless disobedience. 6 years later and with a college degree I can look back on it in retrospect and with clear hindsight and realize, unlike most things that I thought back then, in this case I was right - and should have gone farther than we did. (our prom had similar results)

They banned alumni from going to homecoming the next year (after I graduated.) I wonder who they were trying to keep out?

That's my homecoming story :)

I'm in my last year at school- only have 1 exam left before i'm free WOOP WOOP WOOP. In Australia people in their final year often have a graduation ceremony/ dance/ awards night. This is me and my date Brooke. I have managed to convince her to get in the unicycle a few times and she promises to git it more of a go when school is over and we have more free time.

We're so excited. We had our very first teepeeing! It took 16½ years of life in Rochelle but we finally got it. Looks like the work of freshmen and sophomores and I highly suspect some tricky young soccer players. I was downstairs in the dark watching a movie when I saw them marking on the downstairs windows. I couldn't see who it was but they didn't see me either.

Ben threw on his shoes and sweatshirt and took off in the minivan to see if he could find them. Since he's an upperclassman now, he has the right to hassle them. I think that's how it goes. Anyway, all in fun and we love the participation.

You could defeintely WIN!

If I was your campaign manager, I'd let everyone know I was going to ride around the school on my UNI at 10:30 am, so theyd all be looking for me, and I'd bounce down the stairs in the school on my UNI, and do a drop off the cafeteria table during lunch, and use the photo as the screensaver for all the school computers, with the slogan about me running for Homecoming King.

And I do the same thing in drag, and run for Homecoming Queen as well, and try to win BOTH positions!!!

man. you are a shew in for the positions!!!!!!

Just don't be shy. Think about how it will look on your resume. It'll get you into a better college, and get you all the best JOBS!!

My proposal would be a warm-up jog at Monday's soccer practice over to the Edwards' house to perform cleanup duties.
How are you going to teach them right from wrong???
Me teach them right from wrong??? I immediately supplied Ben with a load of toilet paper, plastic wrap, duct tape, and window chalk, then sent him toward Ashley's house to pick her up before heading out into the dark evening Rochelle mist for retaliation. :)

those are some good ideas... except for all the voting is done with, and all i gotta do now is dress up all pretty for the soccer, volleyball and football games. At our school, there's two games every year that fill the stadium...the Homecoming game, and the South game (they're our big district rivals)...this year, we're playing South for Homecoming...it's gonna be great.

I thought that that was the TPing done on your house?
I meant pictures of the revenge.

Man...whudathunkit...7 billion people, and two of them have the same name, and look alike...I'm just stunned speechless  :p
yeah but if you got ben and benny and put them together you would be hard pressed to tell the difference

Nope. I was afraid to go out that night, you know, with all the crime going on all over the neighborhoods...

Today is our school's homecoming but It's not going to happen now. I woke up this morning and found out school had been closed because there was a chemical fire close to our school that had started at 10 last night. The firefighters don't know what chemicals are inside so they're letting it burn out. Things are kinda hectic over here, they evacuate some neighborhoods around the area including the one across the school. The map they used to show who needs to leave ends right across the road from where I live but it's farther away and the road made an easy border so we're safe. A bunch of friends and I were planning on going to the beach today after the homecoming game but hopefully that will still work out even though the person who was organizing it all was in the evacuate area. It's raining around here and the news said that was helping but one of the main problems they are watching out for is contamination.

My high school 'homecoming' was pathetic. I was in this conservative school that had all sorts of weird rules and they had the discipline mistress come out to tell us that although our petition to have a 'homecoming' has been approved, we've a list of clothes we can't wear, a list of things we can't do, etc etc, some of which were just laugh out loud funny. Everyone thought that was dumb and no one wanted to go in the end so it got canceled.

Then I got into and out of university and it was worse. I didn't go because I didn't think it was worth the price of admission but I had friends who signed up. The event got cancelled but the people who paid didn't know until they called up to enquire when the date drew near.

Today is the game against our rivals. I can't wait. It is going to be insane, it's not homecoming, but it is a bigger game for us.

I am! I just got back from 3 weeks of sitting on teh bench from a dislocated shoulder... but out of the 5 games that I have played in, 3 have been shutouts. We have a really really really deep team this year, we have 4 players hurt/suspended and we still manage to win games, its amazing. How are your local teams doing?

Wanted to do a pre-emptive bump for this thread cause my senior homecoming is tonight and I'm definitely gonna be picture-ing it up.

I know other people here have some homecoming pictures to share. It's that time of year!

At my school homecoming isn't really that big a deal. It's just a semi-formal dance full of rap music.

I'll put this one out there too since it's homecoming related. Wednesday of homecoming week was Dress Like the 80s Day. Brad is wearing a Journey shirt that Mary bought at a Journey concert in 1981. He said hardly anyone recognized him and other students thought he was a substitute teacher.

Is it still cool to call dark glasses shades?

Yeah, people still call them that.

Mainly they are called aviators now. I just say glasses.

It's not homecoming again of course, but we had our Winter Ball recently. Got some good pictures (well stole some from my date's camera).

I don't think that my school has a homecoming dance. I've never been to a dance and I don't plan to ever go to one.

Me either, and it's because I don't see the point.

Side note, you look exactly like this kid I sold some fork springs to on Sunday.

Point is, you, hopefully your girlfriend (Though it would still be fun without the girl), friends and their dates, all get to get together, look nice, dance (if you want to), go to dinner (if you want to), and get to hang out and have fun.

And afterwards is fun to, go watch movies, whatever. Its just a good excuse to get all prettied up, and have fun.

EDIT: Not being in school mean no more homecomings really for me. Last year instead of doing the whole dance, I just took sera out for the day/night. No pictures. Sorry.

Lol cool.

And...well the point? To have fun. Chill with friends. Break loose from the monotony of school. I know at least for me and my friends, being in IB, dances are HUGE stress relievers, which we need. We get to act a fool on the dance floor and no one cares - they're all doing it too!

Sometimes making yourself look exceptionally better than normal is fun. I can understand not liking to dance - but dances are an excuse for a lot more than just dancing.

Homecoming sounds fun, unfortunatley I don't have a bf and I'm not in school. :(

And I can't dance...
