October is Down Syndrome awareness month.

My son, John, has Down Syndrome.

Anyone else here have a person with DS in their circle of family and friends?

I do...your son John :), and Brianna, teenage daughter of some friends in Arizona. Plus a boy next door when I was growing up--Gislain--who was my same age. I could have used a lot more awareness back then...

Steve,

Downs kids are the greatest kids on the face of the earth. Mary works in the Life Skills (spec. ed.) class at the high school. She has been caring for Milagro Sanchez for going on six years now as he moves through the grades. Milagro is quite low functioning but is a joy to be around.

Then I have Johnny Ricker on my JV soccer team. Johnny is high functioning and serves as the manager for the H.S. football team, basketball team and track team. He also has been playing on the soccer team for five years now (he can stay in school until age 21). Johnny is usually the center of attention and the whole soccer team looks out for him. The teams wouldn't be the same without him.

Well I'm not sure if it's DS, but my...step-uncle (is that the term?) is mentally disabled some how. I'm pretty sure it's DS though.
