What's the view?
john_childs
2005-10-03, 05:54 PM
OK. That registered one view.
john_childs

And the previous reply registered a second view.
Now the thread should be up to three views.

Now it jumped up to 7 views all at once.
I don't understand how the new forum is doing the view count. I view the thread and the number of views stays the same. And then all of the sudden it jumped from 2 to 7 when I was the only one here in the test forum.

The view count is not set to be done instantly right now.

Ah, a delayed reaction.
I'm also playing with the threading in this thread to see where replies get put in the thread tree.

Quote the second post.
Where does the reply get put in the thread view?

That's weird.
It put the reply nested under the last post in the thread.
That doesn't make much sense.

Now a quick reply.
I'm going to guess that it will be threaded as a reply to the first post in the thread.

OK. That it did.
The threading when you quote and when you do a quick reply makes sense. The threading when you click the Post Reply button just gets the threading all messed up. The Post Reply button should thread the way the quick reply does.

OK. That was threaded correctly but the quick reply in threaded mode behaves differently than the quick reply in linear and hybrid modes.
Grrrr! The vBulletin people need a lesson in interface design. The UI is inconsistent. Does different things based on context while making no indication to the user about what to expect. If I was doing QA on this I'd have a bug fest.

Here's some quick ideas on how vBulletin could improve the interface.
Get rid of the Post Reply button at the bottom of the page in the linear and hybrid views. Its threading behavior is inconsistent and makes a mess of the threading structure.
Each reply currently has a Quote button in the lower right-hand corner. Add a reply with no quote button next to the Quote button. That will take the place of the post reply button that's currently at the bottom of the page. Threading will be more obvious because it will be clear as to which reply someone is replying to even if they don't quote.
Threaded view needs a little rethinking too. It doesn't have the Post Reply button. Quoting using the quick reply feature in that view is a little confusing and doesn't make it possible to preview your post. A Quote button and a reply with no quote button would make the reply process more clear.
This reply threading problem is going to cause a mess of the threading structure in the newsgroup. It's been mostly orderly now since the update to the References header in the newsgroup. Now with the strange threading by the Post Reply button is going to make the threading in the newsgroup look somewhat random again.

Nope. It's what I do to software. I do software QA. Most people try to avoid bugs in software. I try to find bugs in software. I just did some quick free QA on the forum software. vBulletin should pay me. It was too easy to find those bugs in the threading and the UI.

Ah... that long. I see.

How long have you got to wait between posts?
Creepy, they posted the wrong way round... :)
