Does anybody on here have Skype? For those of you who don't know what it is, it's a free internet talking program. It's like a telephone call only free, internet based, and you talk with your computer microphone. You can find info and download it easily here at www.skype.com . For those of you who DO know what it is and have it, please share your skype name with us! I looked up "unicycle" on the search utility and it came up with Bruce (possibly Yoopers?) with the name "unicycle1wheel" and it also came up with Leo V. with the name "unicyclenet". If you don't have it, PLEASE download it, it is awsome! My name on it is "unicyclist_tyler" and Evan Byrne's is "unicycleman". Try it out, sometime, it RULES!

I'm unicyclenet (without dot)
I use skype for months after seeing an interview on engadget.com
I skipped voicemail, but I took Skype-Out, and recently Skype-In (and voicemail comes free with Skype-in).
I've now pointed my 866-UNI-CYCL to my Skype-In number.
When someone dails it, it rings in my iBook. Aint that cool?
There is also a Skype threath in the German Forum.

OK.. he's getting better. :) Or maybe I am...
When I was in the UK I could understand him, but I think he was trying hard and speaking slowly for me. I was actually able to understand him better than I could understand most the brits.
I called Tom last week at 04:20 AM GMT+1...
Then I dicovered his accent... and found out he was'nt from America.
I could understand him. Years ago I've done circus for a while in Scotland. I remember I had a hard time, but did pretty well. When I was leaving I was tired from spending so much concentration on understanding people. When I was about to leave, on the airport, I made a friend -an English acrobat- almost pee in his pants when I ask the employee behind the desk to if she could speak proper English.
Also it was nice to speak with Bruce (Yoopers).
And yesterday I had someone from Indiana who'd made his first ever Skype call to me, because he just searched on "unicycle".
Ok I got it the funny part is my sister DL'ed it the day before I first saw this thread and I thought it was spy wear or something. I mean its called skype thats a strange name.
tnuarb is my user name.
look at this wierd add I saw on the top of the page of this thread
Skype was made by the makers of of KaZaA, which was spyware. Skype is not.
What you see is AdSense (https://www.google.com/adsense/).
One other hylarious thing was a Skype user in the army. He got an unpleasant visit of some Militairy Police who start investigating what he was doing on his computer. When he said Skype they lost their stress. Skype calls are encrypted, and the admin was scared that top-secrets were flowing away.
Haha I talked to DREWATION for like 3 minutes. It was "hi" "Hi" "lots of breathing...." Tim "unicycle" Drew "yeah" Tim "So do you even go on xbox live?" Drew "sometimes" "I have to go." Tim "bye" Drew "bye"
ah skype is great

Aye, man. I was! I remembered the puzzled look you gave me when I was introduced to you in Germany! And the subsequent strange looks whenever I spoke to you! I thought "cool, another english speaker" (it being Germany) but alas this was not the case.

Hey tyler, add me. Mine is unicyclist_Thomas. Yes I copied you...
You know what I think what would be cool? Have a PC/104 (http://www.kontron-emea.com/index.php?id=226&cat=54&productid=45) mainboard, this chip (http://www.tri-m.com/products/msystems/doc2000.html) as HDD, have some BSD flavour on it (with Skype!), in a box like this (http://www.tri-m.com/products/engineering/ct104.html), but with a nummeric keypad on the closing-plate. and old fashioned telephone-receiver + hook. Then you would'nt need a noisy computer (or laptop) to be online 24/h a day.
All very possible... but of course Skype wont let you play with their GUI.
But using SIP you can make that thing work... but then you rather buy that Cisco VoIP phone, with WiFi Handheld (http://www.cisco.com/en/US/products/hw/phones/ps379/products_data_sheet09186a00801739bb.html) and have some SIP provider.
Anyway, I like using Skype. I start to use it more and more like a regular phone (in and out). And the quality of most phone-calls are good. Computer to computer over many hops is not always perfect... but hey, those call are entirely for free.
i can't get it to work thru the firewall thingy here at work

...and 911 calls.
Though that "problem" is getting improved.
And during the storm in New Orleans, there were multiple people who's internet-connection stayed alive somehow, and had 8 simultanious Skype connections... which connected better than all the dead phones in the entire area. And according the article I did read (at some militairy website) it saved a couple of lives.

And it's called VoIP (Voice over IP [Internet Protocol (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Voip), for you nubs]). It sends packets of information (your sentence/question) to someone else, who replies in the same manner.

Recently I bougth such a T-mobile MDA, with 'unlimted' internet (over GPRS over GSM),
and as it runs Windows PocketPC, it can run that Skype release as well.
On GSM my connection sucks. On another ph. on UMTS I have 300kbps down.
So I'm able to IM in Skype, but speech screws up soon.
If I connect this phone to the net over BlueTooth AND WiFi, I can use Skype for speech. Can even use the headset.
So now I run (almost all) my European and American phone-numbers on one single gadget.

Since recent I have the only USB condenser microphone (http://www.samsontech.com/products/productpage.cfm?prodID=1810) out there.
As USB is 12V, it does not need other power.
It's my 1st condenser mic (http://www.dummies.com/WileyCDA/DummiesArticle/id-2509.html) that I use myself, and it's a big difference!
I use it on Skype to.
Since recent Radio 1 (http://www.radio1.nl) ("the propaganda channel", financed by the government) is using Skype as well.
So, today I was on national radio on "line-quality".
Mixed just like a satelite or ISDN connection (1st production crew, then live, and including all monitoring).
So I talk in my mic at home, and it's broadcasted live on a FM frequency nationwide.
They (and me as well) are very enthousiast about using it this way, as it's much better than a PSTN (AKA POTS) or regular ISDN (voice)phone-line.

I downloaded skype a few weeks ago and used it to call home after my cellphone ran out of minutes. It worked but the sound quality was quite poor. I used it once going skype to skype and the sound quality was equally poor.
If both people have Macs iChat is far superior but the cheep rate to landlines makes it well worth it.
juskaun is my new one. I only have 1 contact :(
You can now update your profile (here at unicyclist.com), and add your Skype name.
cellphone... ...sound quality was quite poor.
Ih both people have Macs...
If both those macs were using a GSM connection the sound quality was horrible.
In other words you are comparing apples to pears; the bottleneck is not in the program Skype but in the limited bandwith your phone offers.
Besides that not the entire world is on mac, as the mac simply is not that far superior.

Im not sure what you are saying here. as far as i can see my comarison has merrit. When I used skype to skype it was to a friend who has a mac. I talked to the same friend on the same computer with the same setup but using iChat. the iChat conversation was much clearer. One HUGE downside to iChat is both people need to be using mac and this is a windows dominated world.
Where i may have been comparing apples to pears is when i called a landline using skype instead of my cellphone but this is why i got skype in the first place (it costs less than 3 cents a minute instead of over 60, and i don't have a landline)
Im not sure what you are saying here.
That your mac's iChat doesn't connect over the internet trough a cellphone connection.
