This link (http://www.wheelsurf.nl) to a motorised monowheel manufacturer/seller was a sponsored link at the top of this site. And it's even Dutch, but I had never heard of it before.

In the NL edition of Metro or Sp!ts was an article on it last saterday.
But why does this one have extra wheels?
If it was'nt snowy that day, I would have ridden this one (http://semcycle.biz/record/gallery/leo/IMG_5718) in Michigan last year.

if you accellerate quickly, can you do a loop in the wheel?

if you accellerate quickly, can you do a loop in the wheel? Yes, In exactly the same way as if you brake too hard the inner ring locks to the outer wheel and you travel with it. The technical term for this rotational 'stunt' is gerbilling.
But why does this one have extra wheels? The extra wheels (or anti-gerbil bars/wheels) are used to stop these rotational effects. By having a set of wheels or a bar outside the diameter of the wheel but attached to the internal frame, these contact the floor if the frame moves in relation to the ground under acceleration or braking and stop it from moving too far round.
Loose.
