Is there a program or way to convert .ai files produced by adobe illustrator (CS if that matters) into .jpg or .gif images?
Thanks

You can do it in illustrator, in the file go to save as for web (something like that) it will take you to another screen on the right side choose jpg in the settings.
Just a guess, but can The Gimp do it maybe?

GNU by the way is a recursive acronym.

GIMP is a bitmap editing program. Adobe Illustrator is a vector based drawing program. Two different animals. A bitmap editing program wouldn't know how to open a vector drawing.
Sodipodi (http://www.sodipodi.com/) is a freeware (GNU) project at Sourceforge (http://sourceforge.net/projects/sodipodi/). It does scalable vector graphics like Illustrator and CorelDraw. It might, maybe, be able to import Adobe Illustrator files.
Otherwise the best bet is to find a computer that has Illustrator installed and export the files as JPG.
