Looks like it will be interesting times for the Catholic (http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=514&e=12&u=/ap/pope_ratzinger_profile) faith.

I was so close! I thought it would be an Italian for sure. But I was right on the conservative aspect. Good old Ratzinger, John Paul II's right hand man. I suppose an Italian couldn't get a majority.
Man, Benedict's old. Guess he's just there to soften the blow.

Woohoo! This is such great news! Now we can all...... ummm, now all of us can.... Oh, uhm, now finally everyone will be able to..... Well..... Come to think of it not a damned thing has changed. Oh well. At least someone's mom is proud.
ps....... It is my understanding that in his younger days, this new pope was a soldier in the German Army under the Nazi regime. Does this mean that somewhere out there, someone was shot and/or killed by the pope?
Talk about a news story.
just my two cents.

Curiously enough I, the Jew, was more willing to let the fact that he was in the Hitler youth - it is said that he was compelled - and served in the German army during WWII - seems he deserted, though waited until 1945 - be forgiven more than my wife, a former Catholic, is.
I think this is a bad time in history for the Catholic Church to have selected such a hardline, conservative as Pope when the whole rest of the world is trying to convince the Islamic world to modernize and democratize. Personally I think it sets a bad example.

I think its funny
I heard every one talking about the nazi thing today... its funny. I dont care.... I just hope they stop making a big deal about the pope thing now, I got sick of hearing about it. Seems justas the news of hes dying.dead got over, then its news of a new pope to control the news stations, and interrupt our scheduled programing.
Note, not religious and couldnt care less about the pope...
And I dotn mean this as disrespectful to people who care... although it probably is, so I appoligize now, but I had to. I have lost my self control for the night.

yeah... I vote no.
Someone was saying that seeing a pope die, and another one elected was a once in a lifetime thing...and how were seeing history being made which is rare.
What were they thinking? I forget who... but... I meanseriously..he could die tomorrow at his age. It could happen twice in a year.
Then again, I could die tomorrow

yeah, well I just cant see it being something thats a once in a life time thing.
I mean, I'm 19 and JP 2 died...
next guy is 78 now, so say, 10 years max (he;ll out live his life span then...)
So, he shoudl be (talking life spans) passed away by the time I'm 20.
They get a new pope. Say, he 50 at the youngest...
I'll be 29. Chances are he'll die before me.
I dunno-it doesnt seem too rare to me thinking of it like that.

the 'Nazi-Pope' thing has got more to do with his fascist attitude towards running the church than being forced to join the Hitler Youth as a kid
it is insanely scary to see another major position of power occupied by one of his ilk

I am and that's a photo taken maybe three years ago and it's pretty much how I look today. Except I've washed the swimsuit a couple of times. Ask Brian. He lives in your hometown. I didn't wear the swimsuit when we went bowling but I do all of the rest of the time. I originally did the pose for the FACES (http://gallery.unicyclist.com/faces) gallery where I'm in the 12th photo.

He's 78. Second oldest pope in history. He's transitional. I just hope he doesn't know that, otherwise he may call Vatican III.

More news from the Papal Front:
'Pope-squatters' Hope To Cash In On Papal Domains
CMP TechWeb
April 19, 2005
Talk about sinners.
Web-savvy speculators snapping up domains of possible names for the next Pope
may have their best bet turning a dollar by selling not to the Vatican,
but to porn site operators, a Web metrics firm said Tuesday.
"Speculators are buying up domains connected to names that might be adopted by
the new Catholic leader," U.K.-based Netcraft said. Among the
"pope-squatters" was blogger Rogers Cadenhead, who admitted to grabbing
half a dozen domains earlier this month.
"My money's on one of these six names: BenedictXVI, Clement XV, Innocent XIV,
Leo XIV, Paul VII, Pius XIII," Cadenhead wrote. "I mean this literally. I
registered all six of these as dot-com domain names earlier this month,
which I feared was tacky -- to say nothing of soul-imperiling -- until I
read about the vacant papal see stamp. Clearly I'm not the only baptized
Catholic who gets geeked about this process."
Some potential papal names are already on the auction block.
PopeBenedict16.com, for instance, is for sale on the domain auction site
Sedo. eBay, meanwhile, shows welcomepope.com offered for $525 and
wehaveapope.com for $150.
Netcraft's take, however, is that a resale to the Vatican -- which has its own
.va top-level domain -- has "almost no chance," and papal fan sites along
the lines of popejohnpaul.com don't have the cash. "Such domains might
have the highest financial value to parties likely to use the name for
decidedly unapproved uses, such as porn sites," said Netcraft. "[They]
routinely purchase G-rated domains -- including whitehouse.com and domains
used by Christian sites -- for use as traffic gateways."
As of mid-day Tuesday, news reports from Rome said that Cardinal Joseph
Ratzinger had been chosen Pope, and will take the name Benedict XVI, one
of the names Cadenhead purchased in his six-name papal domain gamble.

What I want to know is whether the selection of the pope has anything to do with the Pope's Nose.
Besides the poultry reference to the Pope's Nose, there are at least two peaks (Colorado and New Zealand) named the Pope's Nose.
With that vow of secrecy we may never know...

He is the right man for the job. He is an awesomely holy person. I like the fact that he is traditional. He is the person that God wanted as pope, thus he is absolutely the right person to be pope.

he is only infalliable at certain times when speaking of faith and morals, there are things that have to be met such as him saying that it is infaliable. We got a promise form heaven about that just look it up in Matthew.
"Blesses are you Simon son of Jonah, for flesh and blood have not revealed this to you, but my heavenly Father. So I say to you, you are Peter and upon this rock I will build my church, and the gates of the netherworld shall not prevail against it...."
it goes on to say that Peter has the keys to the kingdom of heaven. we got the guarentee, and it has moved on throughout the ages and is with the pope.

If you look up the Greek you will learn something interesting: That Peter means: Petros = pebble
While the rock the church is built on is Petra = Jesus.
The church is not built on Peter who is called a pebble, but is build on Jesus Petra (the rock).
I don't have time now to try to explain it better, sorry.

It is built on Jesus, and also Peter, Peter=Pope, the human head of the Church. Although the Church is sinless because the head is Jesus and the Soul is the Holy Spirit, the people have sinned, but that is what Jesus said, look it up. He gave Peter authority, even though he wasn't perfect, but the Father will tell him/the pope some things about morals and faith, and they will know when.

i found it a little dissapointing that such a conservative was chosen. With 2/3rds of the church base in Africa and south America i thought it would have been more appropriate to choose someone who could suit the needs of the church in the poorer countries of the world who are facing the problems of AIDS, religious divisions and wars.
i'm not religious but i have concern for those who are, and live in the third world and are expected to live under the rule/guidance of a hardline pope.

choosing a hardline pope is a very good thing, he will uphold Catholic doctrine. He will do exactly what the job description is, not slack in the morals; that is why the youth is so excited about him; he is not going to let them do terrible things
