View Full Version : Console Wars!!!

This has been a big issue at my school lately, people arguing about which console is best. So, my friends, please argue amongst yourselves about this topic: PC, Xbox, PS2, Gamecube? I'm going to fuel it by saying that PC is best for Xbox type games and Gamecube is best for platformers. One more thing to argue about: Are walkthroughs a form of cheating or are they a fair way to get unstuck? Now, argue!!! ;)

Evan stop being an ASS and bashing on Tyler whenever he makes a post. This is a thread that I believe a lot of people will be interested in partaking in. I for one am interested in what people say for I am a really big myself and have had this argument with a lot of my friends.
First off PC kicks all other game systems in the face, mainly because of the huge power of games and the incredible graphics that go along with it. The only downside to this is the huge cost of buying a PC that is power full enough to play some of the best games (Half-Life 2, starts drooling at the thought of the game). After PC I would have to say that it would be PS2. PS2 has the biggest selection of games with what I believe to be the best gameplay. Then Xbox because of the infamous HALO and HALO 2. Xbox is basically a scaled down version of a PC so still has incredible graphics. Last comes Gamecube. Gamecube just doesn't have a very good selection of games. There are a couple that are worth mentioning like Mario Kart, Super smash Bros., and the new Resident Evil 4 (which is simply amazing). I happen to have all the systems and a pretty power full PC so I have played my fair share of games.
I don't think that it is cheating to use walk throughs every once in a while to help you out, I know I do. Just don't get to the point where you use them for every game and not just when you get stuck.
Theres my two cents on the subject:D

as i said, you "Low-lifes"
There is nothing anyone can possibly say to alter the fact that all these consoles are mere pretenders to the throne held by the Amiga. Oh yes, racing cows towing caravans against seven other people is still unequalled.
I use walkthroughs occasionally when I get utterly stuck. It's a choice of giving up in frustration, spending many hours trying to work it out for yourself (generally coming to hate the game in the process) or using a walkthrough.
Although having said that even walkthroughs won't help if the game is just too damned hard, like Homeworld 2. I just cannae do it...

I gotta tell you Evan, I think it's hilarious how aggressive you've gotten lately. It's almost like something happened in your personal life that has given you this extreme need to be better than anybody else. For example, in the thread about pedals, you are of course bragging about how much money you say you have, and now you are dissing everyone else to give you this odd, twisted sense of self satisfaction of being above everyone else. The fact is, it's really immature and it makes you seem like the low-life. I like you Evan, and if I didn't know any better, and just read your last few posts, I'd think you were a teenager who sat in their mom's basement sniffing magic markers while watching Baywatch on a 10" TV. No offence at all, but you are turing into a really annoying poster and just remember: when you dis someone else, you are bringing yourself below their "level."

I love homeworld 2. In what way is it hard? Controls? later levels?

HOW MANY DAM THREADS ARE YOU GOING TO MKAE ABOUT GAMECUBES OR CONSOLES
I absolutely loved Homeworld. Blummin' difficult but just right so it was challenging rather than frustrating. On some of the missions - generally early on, before the range of available ships expands - it took on a similar pattern of being nearly wiped out before just managing to pull back from the brink.
You'd start each mission with a half-decent force, get it mostly annihilated by overwhelming opposition, just about manage to survive, rebuild a fleet in time for the next mission only to have it all happen again.
Homeworld 2 takes it a step further; on mission four (as far as I've got; the one with the hyperspace inhibitors and the outpost thing) I just get swarmed after ten minutes or so and don't have anywhere near the number of ships they do. Here's me just managing to defend the harvesters and attack their carrier when in comes another load of frigates, corvettes and fighters to get the mothership or wipe out any reinforcements for anywhere else. Game over...
/me goes off to try again...

I agree with Chase. I've only tried a Ps2 once and I didn't like the controls. I only tried one game, so I wouldn't know anything about that. But yea, the PC rocks followed by Gamecube for Platformers and racing games. I just wish Grand Theft Auto would come out for the Cube.

I believe that all consoles have equal characteristics. Its hard to destinguish what rules over everything because they are all different. Different consoles appeal to different gamers. But I personally, believe the only gaming thing that rules, are portable systems. Sure, the graphics arent that great, but you can take it everywhere. The nintendo DS is coiming out with a web gaming syesem that attaches to it so you can play with people across the country (like xbox live) And the system is portable. I just think consoles are too expensive. But between the consoles themselves, nobody wins. and between the portables, the DS pwns.
Playstation, xbox, and Pc are keul. GC is for little kids who want to play mario and zelda.

I gotta agree a PC will whoop any console's butt even on a bad day. One word. Extendability. I can connect and reconfigure any controller, any display, any sound system (with DSP and effects), and add any soundtrack I like to my games with just a few clicks of a mouse.
PC monitors have better resolution than most TVs. PCs offer more controls simultaneously (gamepad + keyboard + mouse). Most PCs are automatically network-ready, and aren't confined to a subscription service. Some PC games come with source code, letting you hack your games into completely new experiences. I could go on...
... but it all comes with a cost. I can't play any newer PC titles (HL2, Doom3) until I get a faster CPU and better graphics card. I'll have to shell out more dough than it would take to get a new PS2 to fix my current problem. Until then I have to be content with a reduced framerate when I hit complex scenes in GTA3VC or other newer titles.
Now what I want to see are more Linux-compatible games on the market. Waaay too many PC games require Windoze to run, and Windoze wastes resources :(

<reasons why PCs are better
In theory you can connect and configure all manner of thingies, but you start having to worry about compatibility, drivers, unwanted side effects and all manner of niggles. Just as the complexity of the PC is an advantage, so is the simplicity of a console... plug it into your telly and tada, *any* game will work exactly as it was designed to.
As for the resolution of the display... tellies are much lower resolution, but they don't have totally sharp-edged pixels, which gets around this point on a lot of games. Gran Turismo on the playstation looks fantastic on the telly, but through a TV card onto a monitor in the same resolution looks truly hideous. Anti-aliasing is much less important if the display is a telly because it practically does it itself.
Of course, if you're using a telly for a game that needs fine detail like a real-time strategy or whatnot then the resolution and fuzziness work against you. But then, you ought to be playing it on a PC anyway, and save the console for what it's good at; arcade type games where the detail isn't under as much scrutiny because it's either whizzing by too fast or you're too busy having fun...
Almost all of my gaming is done on a PC, but the playstation still has it's niche of being fantastic for a quick session of wipeout every now and then. In that field the PC can't even come close.

Game cube straight sucks, I said it SUCKS! Especially what hte did to Zelda YOU BASTARDS! Why on earth would hte cell shade it when they made n64 zelda in 3d, that was awsome, a brake through, when they trashed it with gamecube in ready to go kill me some game designen asians!
On a lighter note, XBOX RULES, Halo is awsome, Mario was good, till gamecube got its hands on it!
Gamecube does not suck, I remember back before it was even in prototype form and called "Project Dolphin" I was sooooo excited to hear about it, and it didn't let me down a bit, sure there are a few things people don't like with it, but Xbox and PS2 both have things that could be better. The GameCube is a gamers machine, meant for gaming audiences, and a vast majority of that audience is children, so of course some of the design and creation takes that into consideration. After owning all three major systems(GC Xbox and PS2) for more than a year each, i can safely say that neither of the 3 machines are outstandingly better than the other, The systems themselves are great, and not a problem with it. I think where you get off is by judging a system by it's games. It shows how little of a true gamer you are...
Wind Waker wasn't a bad game at all, it well lived up to the Zelda dynasty, the cellshading was cool. Sure, it wouldnt be great for the next Zelda games, but I take it you haven't seen the preview for the new Zelda game. Mario Sunshie was excellent, and should not be dissed apon, I loved it, a great all around game.
Halo is just popular because it is one of the fewer good games for Xbox. Xbox is the best system, as far as hardware goes, but doesn't have a ton of games to go behind it, Halo was one of the few that were/are good, thats why it gets so much attention and is synonymous with the word Xbox.
Just thought I should rant bit at your poorly influenced biases. DK, don't diss game systems, there isn't a system out there that doesnt have something good to offer. Being bised about gaming systems is just as bad as being a racist.

a lot of people express opinions
how many of those opinions are based on actual hands-on experience of all the various systems and how many are based on just owning one, and reading about the rest?
