Hey,

Many of you have been secretly wondering how to kill a thread. Others know exactly how to execute threads. And some just kill threads inadvertently, like you. (You know who I'm talking to).

But what about you others? Have you ever felt that YOU were to blame for the death of a thread that your fellow uni riders had been enjoying? Feeling a little guilty? Or like it might be something about YOU that makes a thread die. Like maybe you are THE COOLER (seen the movie?).

I killed Raphael's fart thread, and despite MuniPsycho's valiant efforts to revive it, the damage was too great. Like the doctors who did everything to save the patient. It's easy to find the thread killers, because the LAST one to post is listed.

I just went to p. 3 and examined the threads. I don't want to point any fingers, but SOMEONE'S name appears MORE than anyone elses. YES, we have a thread MASS MURDERER in our midst.

I will say no more. Do the research. No need to name names. We know who you are..... THREAD KILLER!!!

Billy

what the hell are you talking about? Trashing threads, or going way off topic?

I have looked at Page 3, and 4 and 5 and 2, and there seems to be no name in particular that stands out. In fact, i think the most occurence of one name is only 3 times. I think you might be seeing things we aren't.

I have started 2 threads in 2 days. One was brilliant. They each have zero replies. I am starting to get a complex.

It always seems as though I kill threads when I reply to them...

Somehow I always get my fair share of last replies. ::knocks on wood::

Being the last one to post in a thread is a good thing. That means that you were the one who answered the question or supplied the best solution or presented the most solid argument. After that there is nothing left to be said.

All praise to this brave killer of threads.

Billy,

Not sure what you mean by killing a thread. If I were to click on the "Trash This Thread" button at the bottom, I get a notice that I don't have permission for such a function. Are you referring to something else?

As for Raphael's flatulation thread, I don't believe it's passed but still lingering.

I wanted Gilby or Klaas to research this once. I had a period of thread killing that seemed to go on for quite awhile. I would like to know the number of threads in which one has made the last post as well as the ratio of threads started to threads killed and posts made to threads killed.

That would be AWESOME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! :) :( :o :D

Microsoft Research has a project called Netscan (http://netscan.research.microsoft.com/Static/Default.asp?)

Netscan - Social Accounting Search Engine
Netscan analyzes conversational social cyberspaces like Usenet newsgroups and email lists. It provides new ways of sifting through large volumes of message content and supports a form of reputation system based on the bahvioral histories of participants in conversational spaces.

Unfortunately they don't track the number of threads killed by a poster. They should. That's valuable information for the kind of analysis they're trying to do.

Here's a link to their statistics on RSU: Netscan report for RSU (http://netscan.research.microsoft.com/Static/reportcard.asp?timespan=m&searchfor=rec.sport.unicycling&searchdate=2%2F22%2F2005)

Tim I remember your Threadkiller thing.

John that Netscan is quite interesting. I'll have to look at it in more detail.

Harper that would be an interesting bit of research that you're proposing. My analysing software can't do it but I have been in communication with someone who can add capabilities to what I can do currently - in this respect that is. So [i]maybe[i] next year.

Hey how do I nest vB code? I wanted one word to be large, italic, bold AND in color. You catch my drift.

Klaas Bil the closing square brackets of size and italics should've had a '/' as well

i think that would make all the difference
let's check

[i]maybe

edit: oops no

maybe it's the order of the brackets
let's try again
maybe

i see u also had color twice, that might've been it

Thanks GILD, sequence matters and I made a few stupid mistakes.

Off-topic (unless one considers that this prevents GILD from being the thread killer):

In the overview view of Just Conversation, I clicked on my name behind this very thread (in the Last post column) to bring up my profile, but it brought up GILD's profile instead. I tried it a couple of times, with other people it worked fine but not with this very one thread. Turns out that GILD had posted in this thread after my screen was refreshed. So my name was still mentioned as the last poster, but the link went to the profile of the real last poster, i.e. GILD in this case. Sounds like a bug to me, but a funny one.

i don't consider the title 'thread killer' neccesarily as an insult
i would use that term in a complimentary way to describe john childs
because of his habit of answering a threads main question in such a thorough way, that no futher discussion is neccesary

i think in my case, i do flog the odd dead horse (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&postid=286783&highlight=flogging#post286783) and since i have this terminal problem with trying to get in the last word...

Hey John: With the resulting analysis, it seems like you could offer some help thread killers identify themselves and help them identify what they do to kill, if it's inadvertent.

This has been stated before on this thread. I think it applies much more to RecSport than to Just Conversation. The point of RecSport is different from JustConversation.

Just Conversation is like when we're all sitting around the bar having a lively conversation, and it's fun. Then you arrive and quietly listen while the conversation continues.

Then you say something.

Then nobody says anything else.....

Thread killers have different qualities in different forums.

IE:

1. I tend to be a thread killer in a 'tech' forum I belong.
... Due to I give a solution/answer to a posters question or problem. (last post)
.... (and the original postes rarely post back a 'thank you')
.... and as metioned above I usually DO 'thank you' an reply to any of my threads. (last post)

2. In an 'off topic' forum. I tend to 'correct' or 'straighten out' some rather unrulely thread topics before they turn ugly sometimes.
(in a sort of 'forum police' kinda way)

Anyway ... those are some 'thread killer' patterns I've noticed.

Whoa, Greg, you gotta bring it down just a little, please! I'm getting real misty-eyed just thinking about the awesomeness of the word, Threadkiller. What a rush, man. Let's do it again! I gotta sit down...

You know, while I'm sitting her, I'm sort of taking a liking to the word, Awesomeness, too. What a grand word to roll off the tongue. I think I will spend the world to rename my boys after these two magnificent words.

They don't ring, they SCREAM, they are so totally AWESOME, Bruce. Actually, the kids are fantastic and far beyond the cheapened and highly-overused adjective, AWESOME.

Actually, I like seeing the word AWESOME being used in the fora because, unlike most words, it is occasionally spelled correctly by the user. Unsurprisingly, some of the emoticons are still misspelled.

BillyTheMountain and FrequentPotStirrer started this thread and has never responded and revealed the identity of the "so called" thread killer. Billy frequently has no idea what he's talking about because he bops himself in the head with those clubs so much when he rides and juggles at the same time. He has too many Miyata extensions to make him the kind of guy one would trust anyway.

Announcer: Stay tuned for part two of the Radio Four Production of "The Death of a Thread", coming up...almost immediately.

(music then sound of saw cutting, and other violent sounds, with screaming. Suddenly it is silent.)

Unfortunately... the only way to completely kill the thread is to write the funniest reply in the world (http://www.jumpstation.ca/recroom/comedy/python/joke.html)... and, as a consequence, all who read it will die... laughing.

It's turning into a Python thread - that'll make it more interesting.

BTW my son bought me 'The Complete Monty Python's Flying Circus: All the Words' (http://www.amazon.co.uk/exec/obidos/ASIN/0679726470/ref=pd_bxgy_text_2_cp/202-8552387-5344617) which is great if you're into the Python's.

The Oscar-Meyer wienermobile whistle is playing taps for this thread right now. Mojo like that helps me to OWN this thread. I cannot thank you enough for it.

Bruce-

Put down the .30-06. The barn is on the left. I think it's even the broadside. I could hit it at 600 yards with a 6" .44 Magnum pistol off hand. Sans scope for weak eyed weenies. Toughen up, soldier. 2. In an 'off topic' forum. I tend to 'correct' or 'straighten out' some rather unrulely thread topics before they turn ugly sometimes.
(in a sort of 'forum police' kinda way)

Anyway ... those are some 'thread killer' patterns I've noticed.

opening bid of $100, any takers?
the auctioneer needs someone to open the bidding and that can be done by just raising your posting hand and posting your bid right here, right now, ladies and gentlemen it's a steal, opening this kind of lot with an opening bid of only $100 is the kind of thing that can make auctioneers lose their liscenses, it is criminal, it is an opportunity for u to get in on the ground floor and get a look-in on one of the most exciting lots that's ever crossed this floor and who knows where we'll go from there?
unless u're in, u'll never know

This thread shouldn't be murdered for money. It should die of natural causes by becoming boring. I'll help it pass on peacefully with this post.

There used to be a "show" late at night which was intended to help people turn off their TV and get on with their lives. The show was deliberately so boring that no-one could stand watching it.
Among the topics where:
Cooking: 30 min shot of potatoes boiling.
Latest news: Live from an empty street where a crime might happen, but didn't.
etc.

Now you know about a boring tv-show.
I have tons of similarly boring stuff I could post if this is not boring enough to kill the thread.

we're battling to see who will be the Uber-Thread Killer
the one able to kill a thread about thread-killing
bruce opened this can of worms by basically suggesting that if someone really wanted that title (this is to forum poster a bit like wrestlemania is to ...,well,...those people), they might want to make a donation to The Gilby Fund For Running This Forum and in return, Gilby will lock the thread after that 'annonymous' poster's melodramatic last post, thereby (aritificially) claiming the title of 'Uber Thread Killer and stinking briber'

the traditionalist camp, via their appointed spokesperson Jjuggle, would prefer the process to be more organic, let the thread carry on untill it dies by itself, or by a true thread-killing blow delivered by a true Thread Killer
some people think we should get TylerCox to head up a conclave of senior pos(t)ers to elect the new Uber Thread Killer

John Lurie is a New York hipster, front man for the band The Lounge Lizards, and actor, notably the star of Jim Jarmusch's Stranger than Paradise (http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0088184/), a wonderful film in my opinion.

On this show he and his guest(s) fish while BSing about this and that, predominantly, as I recall from the one episode I saw years ago, how unhip everything and everyone else is.

While offering this show as an antidote to mass marketed popular culture Lurie failed to recognize that substance does not automatically inhere in alternative. Now Baywatch at least had some things of substance.

JJuggle: So you're suggesting if Lurie and freinds were fishing in their bikinis, it would help.....

Or are you sugesting John falls in and they swim out to rescue him?

Hey DD:

What is the text reply buffer? What does it mean to overflow the text reply buffer?

Sounds like you're thinking outside the box on creative ways to kill this thread. I think we'll have to wrap it in JC's designer sheets and keep it very comfortable.....

So JC's longest thread is about to get longer.

john_childs

Oh! Splat!

I don't think the alien is actually dead though. You can't kill talent like that.

What I think happened is that the animator died during the making of the animation. The poor animator had to listen to the song over and over and over so he could get the timing of the animation right. Eventually he listened to it one too many times and just keeled over right there at the computer. They had to figure out a way to quickly salvage the clip by having it end suddenly. His assistant quickly added that falling mirror ball to end it so he could ship the animation off to the customer without having to listen to "I Will Survive" one more time.

The comical bit about caring for a thread in a persistent vegetative state is that you can dress it up in a one piece bathing suit and it won't know the difference. It's completely unaware that it is being humiliated and mocked. That makes it all the more fun.

Nat does make life difficult for himself. He's a pro life liberal and quite willing to defend the free speech rights of people the left opposes. It's a wonder he gets invited to any cocktail dinners.

A little Googling and I managed to find The Last Word (http://members.iglou.com/bandit/lastword/). Nothing more can be said. It's all been said before.

He wrote quite a few liner notes in his day.

The first ten shouldn't be left/right issues. Nor should 13, 15, 19, and 24.

When will Mr. Boogiejuice kill this thread?

Am I the fabled bringer of forum death then?

I always wondered why people edged away from me slowly when I engaged them in conversation.

*icy touch*

My work here is done.

Kit This is slightly laughable as if you flip back over the past 8 pages containing the past 200 threads posted in, your name is listed as the last poster in only 1.

It would be fairly easy, if a bit time consuming to determine who had the most last posts. I'm surprised no one has bothered.

I have determined that GILD, Jagur, and myself are the leaders in posts with no responses at all. :)
