Welcome to the music thread.
The basic idea here is one place to discuss absolutley anything and everything about music, any kind/style whatever. Recommend good music, request music (to download or whatever), talk about favourite songs, bands, genres, anything goes aslong as its about music! I think you get the idea. I know there are other threads about music, but this is one place to discuss it. So get talkin':D

Okay I may aswell lead my example and get this thread going.
Where is a good place, online, to download music (for free obvously) with a wide range of music etc?
I know Alta Vista is quite good...but is there anywhere else people know of?

I've recently become addicted to good ol' Reggae, thanks to my father(big hippie). I listen to Bob Marley, sure but theres soooo much more.
My top 3 Reggae Groups/Artists:
1. Jimmy Cliff
2. Bob Marley
3. Burning Spear
Top 3 Reggae songs:
1. Kinky Reggae - Bob Marley

Actually, my dad introduces me to alot of great music. He used to be in the record buisiness or something, having a collection of over 12,000 records.

Exactly like that. I'd really reccomend DL'ing some sort of P2P rogram, but if you still have that bad compy, you might be better off just DL'ing from the net.

Thanks for that Catboy. Say you seem to have a pretty similar taste in music to me...what are some of your other favourites I probably haven't heard of, and you would recommend?

That could take an hour of typing.
Ill just slowly list my favorite 3 of a ton of stuff.
Favorite 3 Bassists:
1. Jaco Pastorius(greatest bass player ever)
2. Stanley Clarke
3. Victor Wooten
Check'em all out.
Stanly Clarke was in the group Weather Report, and with Al Di Miola, so their stuff is him. But Jaco and Victor did a TON of solo stuff, and in my opinion the best of their playing.
I reccomend the following composers;
1. J. S. Bach.
2. Felix Mendelssohn
3. Jean Sibelius
4. Dmitri Shostakovitch
5. Aram Khachaturian
6. Peter Tschaikovsky
7. Ralph Vaughan Williams
8. Karl Maria von Weber
Listen to lots of Concertos and Symphonies- those are usually their best works.:)

Alright! A favorite classical composer list. I also like classical music. Some of my favorites (in no particular order) are:
J. S. Bach - organ music
Dmitri Shostakovich - symphonies
Ludwig Van Beethoven - symphonies
Sergey Rachmaninov - piano concertos
Johannes Brahms - symphonies, Hungarian Dances
Antonin Dvorak - symphonies, Slavonic Dances
Carl Nielsen - symphonies
Jean Sibelius - symphonies
David Diamond - symphonies
Peter Tchaikovsky - symphonies and others
Carl Orff - Carmina Burana
Gustav Holst - The Planets
Modest Moussorgsky - Pictures At An Exhibition
Vaughan Williams - Sinfonia Antartica
And there are others in my collection, but those are the ones I'm most likely to pull out first if I'm just looking for something to play. I do like the Schostakovich symphonies. There's a bunch of them that I have more than one version of. When I was living in Portland OR the Portland Symphony was playing a lot of Schostakovich so I got to hear several of his symphonies live. That was a treat.
You've got Aram Khachaturian on your list. I know I've heard some of his works, but I don't have any in my collection. I'll have to put him on my need to get list. What pieces should I get?
And right now I'm listening to Prokofiev's Symphony No. 5. It's been a while since I've listened to it. :)

Reggae and classical are two areas of music where my cd collection is pretty sparse, but ill list some favourites anyway:

Have you guys seen the lyrics to Carmina Burana?
Apparently they are based on some 12th century German poems or something and they are pretty crazy, I think the poets must have been on the absinthe!

your just talking jibborish now, The Newsboys were the back up band for Huey Lewis, you know that group that put out the theme song for the back to the future movies, The Power of Love.
What ever happend to them anyway?

Carl Orff is tainted by staying in Nazi Germany during that time. And Hitler was indeed a fan of Carmina Burana. But Carl Orff was not a Nazi. He did do some musical work at the request of the Nazi government. At best he was indifferent. Neither actively supporting nor actively denouncing the Nazis.
I found a good thesis paper about Carl Orff that covers his Nazi era involvement in better detail that I'd seen in other sources. The paper is here (a 2.1 MB PDF file): Themes of the Carmina Burana: Medieval and Modern (http://www.xavier.edu/classics/Theses/Themes%20of%20the%20Carmina%20Burana-Medieval%20and%20Modern.pdf). His Nazi era involvement is on pages 12 through 17 of the paper.

Hey Catboy I listened to your advice and gave those Bass players you recommended a listen. Wow that Jaco guy is awesome! A hole new style of music I rarely listen to but I liked it! Know anywhere I can download some?
Oh and on another note I just got the Pearl Jam - Yield CD...just copied it off my comp onto CD.

No its not the same group at all, Huey Lewis and the News were a Rock band back in the early 1980's. I was just making a joke and was glad to see that Raphael at least got it.

Oddly enough, when that song first came out I would have sworn it said, "They say the heart of rock and roll is in Cleveland."
I may have been wrong, but wouldn't you know it they went and stuck the R&R Hall of Fame there.

it was at Creationfest (http://creationfest.gospelcom.net/west/) 2002 and 2003, about 6 hours away from me. we went with a group of about 40~50 and stayed there about 7 days. pretty fun trip.

Yeah I gotta agree with you on AC/DC - Angus Young is just magic with his guitar. I just love good guitaring.
But Wierd Al? Can't say im much of a fan. I dont' really see it as good music - just kinda funny lyrics. I prefer Tenacious D.

Let's broaden this thread a bit: Anyone ever see the Violent Femmes in concert? I saw them backed up by an 8-piece wind section--The Horns of Dilemma. Their musical skills really come out in concert, when they don't have to stick to the short song format. But I think it's that way with a lot of bands these days. You just can't record a soaring or hot guitar solo or (heaven forbid) drum solo in popular music anymore, but you can show your stuff and jam in concert.
How about Macy Gray, The velvet underground , or Youssour Ndour?
Catboy: I love Bad Religion, Beatsteaks, Rancid, Greenday. How about Rage against the Machine? What do you think of their new stuff? And Blink?
Tom Waits fans (JJuggle?) frequent this forum. How about Marianne Faithful (ex-lover of Mick Jagger). Select Stones stuff is great.
And of course, if you travel to other nations, you find great music that no one outside that nation knows of. We just brought back some wild music from Egypt.....

Wagner died before the Nazi movement, but yes, he was vocally antisemitic and Hitler hugely loved his music. I think they also played Wager at Nazi rallies.
Wagner doesn't get played in public in Israel while Carl Orff does.
Fortunately, I don't much care for Wagner's music.

I agree with you that Carl Orff and his Carmina Burana are soured somewhat.
I disagree with you about Wagner. :) I have only two CDs with Wagner's music. And they hardly ever get played. Fortunately they were both purchased used. I don't much care for his music.

I find Wagner's music to be filled with achingly longing beauty and powerful emotion. Oddly, or not, it has much the same effect, although obviously stylistically different, as some Bach. It's inspired and visceral.

I'll have to give Wagner another try with some new music. The two CDs I have just have excerpts from his operas and are not complete. Maybe listening to a complete opera would get the music to come together.
I'll have to get his Siegfried Idyll, an orchestral work, and see if that suits me. I'm much more in to orchestral music than opera.
I pulled out one of my music history books and this is how the author introduced Wager
Richard Wagner was a dreadful human being. He was a liar, a cheat, a wife-stealer, a home-wrecker, and a betrayer of friends. He was anti-Semitic, anti-Catholic, and anti-French. He was immoral and dishonorable. No one in music had a bigger ego, and he properly belongs high on a list of the World's Most Unpleasant Men.
He was also, of course, an incredible musical genius. It is impossible to like Wager, but almost equally impossible to deny his genius. ...
The author also lists Wager at number 4 on his list of the 50 greatest composers of classical music. The first three are Bach, Mozart, and Beethoven.

Where did mahler fall on that list??
How about the thread from Wagner through Mahler to the atonal and modern compositions? Do you like Mahler? Does anyone like modern composers? Zappa listed Stravinsky and Karlheinz Stockhausen as major influences, on his first album.
I know there's a lot of Zappa fans out there. I remember hearing lots of Zappa playing at the East Coast MUni this past autumn.
Hey Pissin: Can you recommend the best CD by The brian Setzer Orchestra? your description makes them sound like something I'd like to hear more of.

The absolute best is a 2004 release titled Brian Setzer Orchestra - The Ultimate Collection, on Surfdog Records. It is a 2-CD set, recorded live. First disk is early in the band's tenure, raw, edgy, trying to prove something. Second CD is later, after the band has really had a chance to gel together. Both disks are awesome.
As you know, I would never steer you wrong Billy. Well, except maybe that one wrong turn over Andrews Air Force Base.

Mahler came in at 17 in the list. But the list is highly subjective and even the author suggests juggling them around for personal taste.
The top 20 in the list (in order) are:
Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Wagner, Haydn, Brahms, Schubert, Schumann, Handel, Tchaikovsky, Mendelssohn, Dvorak, Liszt, Chopin, Stravinsky, Verdi, Mahler, Prokofiev, Shostakovich, R. Strauss
Most of the composers that I listed in my list of favorites are Modern or 20th Century composers. The others are mostly from the Romantic period.
I've got three Mahler symphonies on CD (1, 2, 8). I listen to them, but not regularly. I need to add his song cycles to my collection.

Personally I think Stravinsky is very accessible. I think the fact that I recall playing Stravinsky in band in high school is a testament to that. I listened to atonal, disonant music in high school and college, but such music really is work.

One of the CDs in my collection is Michael Torke's (http://www.michaeltorke.com/) Color Music. It's very syncopated and dissonant. But still not a chore to listen to at all for me. In fact, I just put it in the CD player right now. A bit of a toe tapper in places. But if Beethoven ever heard it he would probably go in to seizures.

I just found a whole Pearl Jam CD sitting on my comp...my sister must have downloaded it. So I copied it to CD. I had been hoping to buy Pearl Jams greatest hits...but this is good, and free.

Bandits of the Acoustic Revolution.
They are a huge band that Chex recently turned me onto.
I've always liked Garbage, they have a cool sound
CAKE! They have some really awesome stuff.

I haven't seen many rap fans in this thread. maybe I just haven't read it closely enough.
As many who've spoken to me on AIM would know, I'm a pretty big fan of Immortal Technique (Check out Revolutionary Vol. 2. far better than Vol.1 Favorite song is probably "Harlem Streets"). I also like Aesop Rock, Nickatina, Del Tha Funky Homosapien/Deltron3030, etc. I'm not a huge fan of Nelly (as a matter of fact I can't stand him), and other than Mosh I haven't heard much good stuff mby eminem. Seriously,. though, something is wrong if you have nothing better to rap about than your shoes.

Last thing: I like most classical music, although I never really bother to find out who wrote it or performed it. One I do remember is John Williams' "The Cowboys". The middle section of it actually felt like a musical painting of a scene. Very peaceful. Pavannes also are nice sometimes. Belle Qui Tiens Ma Vie was cool when played right. One type of classical I can't stand is the modern dicordant type of stuff. I've heard some stuff meant to sound like people giving a speech. It was interesting for about 5 seconds, then annoying. If I wanted to hear something sounding like a speech, i'd listen to a speech, not some flautist on crack.

If you like Phish then you should check out etree.org (http://www.etree.org/). They have Phish concert recordings. It's a bit of a learning curve to learn how they go about sharing the files. They've got their own rules for how they do things.

Billy, I'm very much into the violent femmes. Much to my dismay I've never seen them play but my sister's seen them twice in the last year or so...The fiend!
Someone above said they liked rap but were picky...Then in the next breath stated 50 cent as a favourite...Gosh how I chortled.
At the moment I'm listening to the John Butler Trio pretty much non-stop. Going to see them in 12 days (count 'em 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 10 11 12). Can I wait? No I can't. I saw them at Glastonbury this year and they were pretty special but I reckon this'll be better. It's a pretty small venue which suits John Butler's music. Though the vibe at Glastonbury was pretty special; knee deep in water having just been through the scariest storm I and most people at the festival have ever encountered.
Been listening to quite a bit psy-trance recently after being subjected to it non-stop for two months at festivals. Shpongle and Infected Mushroom are good as an introduction to psy-trance.

Psy trance is difficult to get into until you've been to a psy-trance night/festival. And yes, there's a lot of bad psy-trance about. But it's worth sticking with as you get to party in surroundings like these:

They Might Be Giants are one of the few bands that can actually rock an accordian. Their music could only be inspired by insanity and can only be performed with extreme talent. They're definitely in heavy rotation on my personal playlist.

It depends on what I'm in the mood for. Sometimes it's baroque. Sometimes it's classical. Sometimes it's romantic. Sometimes it's 20th century. The 20th century period seems to be my favorite though. Shostakovich is a favorite from the 20th century period.
I do draw the line at including Mozart. Mozart's music is boring and not interesting. I'd rather sleep than listen to it.

I play instruments for my own amusement and amazement. Meaning that I'm not very good at playing.
I played alto saxophone and baritone saxophone in middle school and high school band. I played alto sax in college marching band. Fiddled with playing basic organ during elementary school (chords with left hand melody with right). Then got an accordion (piano keyboard style). The accordion is fun and interesting but I certainly can't play it well.

The library was getting rid of several records in their collection to make archive space last fall and I scored a few Shostakovich recordings from them. Actually most of my classical records are disposals from the library, expanding my mind through space management :D I can't remember any of the titles off the top of my head, but I do enjoy that style, 20th century, or as I know it, pre-Nixon era sound-recordings.

Whatever may be wrong with Mozart's place in popular culture, he wrote some beautiful and moving music. I believe that you may have convinced yourself that he is crap, but that you have done so for ideological reasons.
I find nothing contradictory about enjoying and consuming The Beatles and Throbbing Gristle or Mozart and Elliott Carter.

Yes. And if you've heard one of his symphonies you've heard them all.
His music is boringly predictable. And that's my gripe with Mozart.
As an example. Back in college my roommate played a Mozart symphony CD that I had never heard before. I started humming along to it. He asked if I had heard that piece before since I was humming along with it. No. It's just that Mozart's music is predictable enough that you can hum along without ever having heard the music before. Boring. But still beautiful music to listen to.
Why shouldn't music be predictable? Plus, you might've heard that symphony before, you just didn't remember it. Happens to me with a lot of music. I know the melody, but have no idea where it's from and can hum along to the song. Doesn't mean that song is predictable. Or maybe you just think like Mozart.
Anyway, I stand by what I said. If you call Mozart crap, you're a little panzy.

Personally, my two favourite composers are J.S.Bach and Isaac Albéniz. I'm not really into Mozart, except for a few pieces, but I certainly don't think he's crap(I'm no pansy). Haven't you heard: Mozart is the greatest metalhead ever!

In other news, recently I realised that I'm pretty sick of classical/baroque music. I always used to like it, but I think that now I'm just tired of it. That's why I've been barely practicing my guitar. I tried playing some funk and really enjoyed that. I think I'll give classical music a brake. The only problem is, I've got my guitar exam in less than two weeks and I practice the pieces about once a week. I just can't make myself do it, I'm so tired of them. There is one Dowland piece that's really difficult and I never really liked it in the first place. It's a bit over half the final speed now and I don't practice it. Bollocks. I think I'm gonna get a crap grade because of this. And this is my final year, too. Oh well. Music is there to enjoy and groove to it, not to get a good grade in it. Yeah.

I got thinking about this after reading the poetry thread, they where debating on whether poetry needed a meaning or a way it connected with the audience or not? well i say debating, it was more of an argument.
I was wondering what people thought about music that doesn't really have an obvious meaning and whether or not they enjoy it. i know Modest Mouse sing quite a few songs that really mean nothing to me what-so-ever but they are still up there as some of my favourite songs. The Eels also have some great little songs that dont really mean anything at all (to me) and i still have no idea what Ben Kweller is going on about in his song Sha Sha. But none of that matters, i still love the songs. I am not talking about Techno or heavy metal, where there is no words or the words are un-understandable. I mean real songs, that are not full of that miserable "girl doesn't love me anymore" Or the Hardcore "i kill peeps" or even the Feminist "i dont need men to love me" just good old fashioned singing about whatever.
I love these type of songs (Regina Spektor sings quite a few good ones) because it takes you out of reality for a moment. All the songs on the charts at the moment have sentiment and remind you of something either good or bad, that doesn't have a political msg, that isn't trying to influence you. Just something that sounds good.
They might be Giants are excellent at this, though i must add some of there songs just sound plain terrible :)
i dunno i could go on for ever and only go around in circles.. someone has got to relate to me :) hopefully.

There is alot, and i mean alot of older stuff i listen to that means nothing to me, but i like it very much.
I think its just part of who you are, in my opinion the music people listen to tells you alot about who they are/they type of person they are.
Listening to stuff that means nothing to you is what draws you from the emotional/meaningful stuff that gets you thinking, it allows you to chill out.

4 years. I'm having my grade 8 exam next week. My teacher was predicting a distinction, but now due to my complete lack of practice and sudden dislike of classical music, I'm gonna be aming for a pass.
This is what I don't like about music exams anyway. Music isn't about grades, it's about beauty. You can't rate that. I don't think I ever want to take another music exam in my life.
