View Full Version : TWNR US Release: Updated Info
Brian MacKenzie

Hi everyone, the updated info is just about the same as the last info...
The date is still Feb 19th (the only date I can actually do this event)
In order to ride at the event, you (or your parent) need to sign a waiver, I will be posting one here when I get it.
Only riders have to pay, spectators are free, but may not bring in a unicycle with them.
I have to pay $150 min anyways, so either pay me by money order or check in advanced, or at the door, BUT...you will not be allowed in if you are not on the list I submit on Jan 30. I will be submitting the list to him with (rider) or (spectator) checked off, so please email me if you are coming for sure, and who will be coming with you. And like before, the first 10 emails I get will get the $15 admission price. (all prices are in US funds)
The movie will be available for $18
Check out the initial thread for more info, like Dave Lowell's posting of hotel info...
(but please keep any replies in this thread)
http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=36914
Thanks
Brian MacKenzie

There is a white space painted on the wall that can be darkened to play the movie better. A screen will offer a better picture, so I will try to get one.
We can bring any wheel size we want.
Spectators cannot bring in a unicycle
Riders can bring in a few different unicycles (only people who pay may ride though)
Thanks

That was supposed to read a white space painted on a wall in a room that can be darkened

The unofficial list right now is roughly 10 riders and some spectators (so far it's already a very nice NYMW reunion!)

I have intended for some time now to post a video of my Coker riding at Rays last month (and for an even much longer timeframe... to complete the video of my uptown skatepark riding). I do my editing at a studio I have to rent time in since I don't have editing software/equipment at home and I have encountered many difficulties, including my work being wiped out twice! I do, however, have a low resolution version of a decent version of my work in progress "Skatepark/Rays" video, even though the file size is quite large (53.3 megs). I lost a good amount of my work after I burned the low rez version, so I didn't have a chance to burn the high rez version (which would have probably been about 1.5 Gigs). I really wanted to give you guys an opportunity to see just how awesome a place Rays is to ride a unicycle!!! I wanted you to see the high resolution version so you can really appreciate some of the obstacles (especially the elevated skinny I attempted to ride a few times... which is particularly difficult to see clearly in the low rez version of the video), but it could take me a while to get back to where I was and the number of days til Brian's great event at Rays are getting fewer and fewer! Therefore I have decided that I will most likely post the video to the forum (or perhaps the NYUC site if Dave Lowell is willing to post it there) so that you guys can have a chance to at least see some footage (even if its low rez) of uni riding at the amazing Rays MTB! Unfortunately, Dave Lowell's riding is not featured in this version (which I intended), but he will be making some appearances in releases of future versions of my video. There is one other issue that I need to address and I would very much appreciate your cooperation. Rays MTB park was designed for mountain bikes, NOT 36" wheel unicycles (known to us as "Cokers"). Being that I am sitting a good foot higher than the mountain bikers, I unfortunately learned the hard way that there was not enough clearance from some of the beams and rafters in the ceiling of the warehouse for a Coker to succesfully ride some of the larger/higher ramps in the expert section of the course! This is by no means Ray's fault, because as I mentioned previosly... the course was designed for mountain bikes, NOT Cokers! Thus this post should also serve as a safety alert to anyone who intends to go to Ray's to ride a Coker (or any unicycle or bicycle that places you at a greater height than a typical mountain bike) that you should ALWAYS check the clearance of any ramp for which you have the slightest doubt about the clearance BEFORE riding it! Because the low rez version of my video does show my unfortunate incident (which I did not intend to include on the version that I would upload), I do not want my video to be the source of any negative publicity for Rays... the place is way to awesome! I hope my video will have the opposite effect... that people will see how much fun it is to ride there and will simply recognize that it was my stupidity for riding my Coker on such a high ramp without checking the clearance first! Hopefully, my lack of judgement should prevent the rest of you from making the same mistake! In any case, please be mindful that Ray is concerned about the possibility that a clip of my video showing the footage of my unfortunate incident at his park could circulate around the Internet rather quickly if someone extracted that segment and sent it to his/her friends (who send it to their friends and so on...) generating negative publicity. Thus I would very much appreciate if that segment of my video is NOT extracted and distributed on its own. As a matter of fact, the entire video is intended for the community of unicyclists on this forum and other unicyclists (or perhaps Mountain Bike enthusiasts) that you want to show it to... but NOT as a mishap/gag clip for the general public to view! I would very much appreciate your cooperation regarding this matter and the cooperation of anyone you should send it to (please advise them). Thank you in advance! All that being said, the updated low rez version of my skatepark/Rays video should be online by Friday, January 7 (or Thursday, Jan. 6th, if possible), but you better have a high-speed connection (or plan on waiting forever for it to download), since its 53.3 Megs (and almost 7.5 minutes). Hope you enjoy it and it inspires you to get yourself (and your Uni's) to Brians Release/Ride party at Rays amazing facility!!!

Ray's alcohol policy has changed...we can no longer consume alcohol there. There will be other drink and snack on it it's place.
Anybody who is going to be there around supper time and wants to come out with me+leeanne+peter+allison+d5+HCR, we would love to have you! (I just self included those last two, and now they are locked in)

I guess I'll go. I have to. I'm locked in.
Here's an important shout to whoever is going...
MAKE YOUR HOTEL RESERVATIONS NOW!!!!
The "Advance Purchase Rate" has gone up from $59 to $69 (USD). Soon, you will not get the special rate. Then you will have to pay $89 per night ($79 if you have AAA). Do not delay any longer!
For the hotel info I previously posted, look here (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?postid=257271#post257271). The Holiday Inn (at the Cleveland Airport) is the official hotel of the TWNR World Premier Party.
Go to Holiday Inn - Cleveland Airport (http://www.holiday-inn.com/cle-airport) and enter the dates you will be staying. Leave the Rate Preference to "Best Available". That should give you the Advance Purchase Rate (which is better than the AAA rate). If it doesn't, then you are too late. Go back and select AAA if you have it. Note that you are not able to cancel if you select Advance Purchase Rate. They will charge you for the full stay no matter what.
See you at Ray's!
Edit: are we eating at MacKenzie's Bar and Grill?!?! :)
Edit2: I made the hotel link go straight to our hotel instead of their main page.

Here is a current version of the ride list. Some people have expressed an interest, but if you are not on the list as it's posted in this thread, you are not confirmed, and need to be if you wish to come. People are noted as (R) riding, or (S) spectating.
With all the mention of rolling trials in the threads in RSU, and the talks of not including smaller wheel in the event (and references to tracks at Ray's) that this is not the case with the release party. While we will certainly be able to put into practice many of the things HCR has been mentioning, this event is focused on everyone, and as I recall HCR mentioning, there is even a trials section. (Rolling Trials will certainly be tested out by those interested, but is not the focus of the whole event. it would certainly be a great time to put some experience into the wheel size issue, with riders on their favourite unicycle seeing how wheel size will even make a difference. Anyone coming who rides a 29r?)
Any wheelsize is encouraged to make it's way out.
I will also be bringing the UW36 for those wanting to try it out. (I'm going to have to limit myself to the lower tracks with this one!)
There will also be two video cameras there (Spickydoo now has the same one used in the filming of TWNR...it's piture quality leaves little to be desired!)
The list:
Brian MacKenzie (R)
Leeanne MacKenzie (S)
Dave Lowell (R)
Andrew (HCR...why can't I picture Andrew's last name? (R)
Peter Sanford (R)
Allison Sanford (S)
Tim Braun (R)
Nick Vadala (R)
Jim Vadala (R)
Earl Vadala (S)
Kyle Grasso (R)
Joshua Torrans (R)
There are 2 more spots available at $15 (I'll pass mine off :) ) any additional riders will need to pay the $20 admission
Please reply using the given format

I mentioned that Richard Aschenbrenner (Spickydoo) was going and would probably want to split a room with you, as we already have a full room (I don't know what his hotel room plans are though) I would suggest anyone looking to split up a room with someone, this might be a good place to organize that.

I would love to meet you, and hope that you can come. I do however need to reserve a projector if you cannot bring yours.
Actually, I may as well just go ahead and rent it, and not have you bother packing it up and taking it. (And I'm renting the screen anyways)
So thanks for the offer, really appreaciated, but don't worry about it. But I hope you can still come.

You know I'm joking... Really, its definitely no problem for me to bring the projector. But, if its a situation where you have to reserve the rentals ahead of time and you have to know for sure before friday, then I would say its safer for you to go ahead and reserve the rental projector.
But, if you can wait til friday for when I'll know for sure if I can make it, then its really no problem for me to bring it.
I hope I see you guys there too. I won't present much of a challenge, but I hope to give that Hardcore Coker fella another cokerist to go up against.

If you haven't seen the latest message I posted under my "Rolling Trials" thread (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=37568&perpage=15&highlight=&pagenumber=4) ... Dave Lowell and Jeff Prosa came back from Rays and reported that Jeff was able to complete a very impressive, wide array of obstacles and Sections... and had a great time doing it... thus proving the viability of the sport for the smaller wheel-size classes.
I intend to organize the first Rolling Trials competition at Rays on the 19th... so I'd love to know:
1. When are you arriving?
2. When do you anticipate you'll be at Rays once you arrive (you'll probably want to rest after driving if you're arriving that day)?
3. What size uni's will you be riding? Let me know all sizes if you're bringing more than one?
4. Would you like to participate in the 1st Annual HCR Invitational Rolling Trials competition? If so... in which classes (24"/26", 28"/29", or 36")
I'll be at Rays on Friday to plan out the Sections for each class and write up handouts that I'll duplicate and give out to all the competitors. Although I'd like to participate, I'm not sure that it would be fair for me to be allowed to be the winner (if I even win, that is) since I have already had practice on the course (and nobody else has, except Dave Lowell).
If any decent 24"/26" and/or 28"/29" riders are arriving on Friday and can help me plan out the Sections for the smaller wheel classes, that would be awesome!
I can't wait to meet and ride with everyone!!!!

At $0.00 (Canadian or US) , the price is certainly workable for spectators! I'll have to try to bring a few of our new uni riders up for some inspiration.

If you are currently mistakenly registered for a class that you do not want to compete in or if you are not registered for a class that you would like to compete in, please let me know. Also please let me know what time on Saturday (or Saturday night) is the most preferable time to schedule the competitions.
Because there are no riders that are bringing 28”/29” unicycles, there will not be a competition scheduled for that class (Jockeys). There will be a competition for the 36” class (Pilots) and 24”/26” (Runners), however, with 6 pilots and 7 runners currently registered.
An “Unlimited” class competition is also a possibility, if there is sufficient interest… please let me know if you think we should plan on having an “Unlimited” competition as well (keep in mind that time constraints could be an issue).
Due to some confusion regarding nicknames and real names, I am uncertain as to the current status of the riders listed below. Please let me know which nickname goes with which real name or vice versa. Also, if you’re not on my list above for the Rolling Trials competition, please let me know whether or not you’re interested in participating… it would be great to have as many participants as possible…and you’ll have a lot of fun! Thanks a lot.

I'd like to schedule a time slot for the Rolling Trials competition... but I have no idea what time slot would be best for everyone. Any suggestions as to what time slot would work best would be greatly appreciated. I'd like to have a competition for at least two classes: 36" (pilots) and 24"/26" (Runners) and possibly "Unlimited" if there is sufficient interest. I'd like to be registered under both the 36" class and the 26" class (although I expect to pose no challenge in either).
If somebody wants to compete in the 36" class, but has no 36" wheel (Wogri?), then I would have no problem lending my wheel. Would that be feasible for the competition? I assume we'll do the lines one rider at a time.

You can definitely compete in both classes! Actually, that's really great that you'll be competing in both because you will be able to provide a first hand comparison of the similarities/differences of the two classes as well as which types of obstacles are the most difficult for each class.
Regarding posing a challenge... the course challenges each individual rider and this competition is all about having FUN, anyway - by organizing a competition... everyone gets to see everyone else ride (and conquer obstacles they haven't ever ridden before) and talk about technique and strategy and have a really great time enjoying the camaraderie of being one of the pioneer participants in the very first competition for an exciting new sport! I truly believe that everyone who participates will have an incredible time... whether you come in first place or last.
Your assumption regarding doing the lines one rider at a time is correct... so there is absolutely no problem at all with lending your wheel to another rider. As a matter of fact, I'd also be happy to lend my Coker to anyone who wanted to compete, though my seat post seems to be locked/rusted in place, so the current seat height would have to be acceptable for you - I'm just under 5'11". Can't wait to meet everyone!
Hey I'd like to do the rolling trials. I'll be able to bring my coker. So add me to the 36" list please.

edit- I do not think Kyle Grasso is going. Jim (my brother) is not participating in the competition, he is just going to mess around on the obstacles on his trials uni last I heard.

Sorry you can't make it... but thanks for letting me know. I was looking forward to meeting you and riding with you... but I know that the dates don't always work out and that things come up (work and other realities of life). Hopefully I'll have a chance to meet you and ride with you at some other event sometime.

That's great to hear that you want to give it a try. I think you'll have a really awesome time! I will most likely be bringing two Cokers. There may be a problem adjusting the seat height on one of them... but I should be able to fix that problem before the event, so it probably won't be an issue. My other Coker is available for you to use exclusively... or share with another rider that wants to compete but doesn't have a Coker... if that situation arises. I'd be willing to share my main Coker with another rider who wants to compete, as well.
Hey Nick... do you know if Jim Vadala (your brother?) wants to compete in the 24"/26" class or the 36" (Coker) class?

Oh, wow, that's awesome! Thanks a lot, I'll definately give it a try now that I can use your coker.
Jim said that he doesn't want to do the rolling competition, he just wants to go for the regular trials course and trails.

Kyle Grasso is booked for a Harrisburg hotel Saturday night, so I don't think he's coming.

I'm so bummed. I just found out that the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame isn't open on Saturdays during the winter... That screws up my whole trip. What a let-down.

Dave Lowell has graciously offered his Dave Stockton-built Coker to anyone who would like to use it for the competition.
Any last minute additions can be accommodated on the day of the event.
Tentative Schedule for Competition:
24”/26” class: 10:00pm – 11:00pm
36” class: 11:15pm – 12:15pm (assuming Brian doesn’t mind pushing his video premiere back 15 minutes in order to provide a rest break for those people participating in both classes)

That's fine, I'll have your ass kicked by half past anyways.
Movies for sale:
I will not have my movies back in time for this event, but have a workaround that I'm sure will please everyone.
I am able to make DVD's on my own, and will have those available for almost half price of the actual release. The only difference will be these will have a colour label, the ones I am waiting for will be silscreened.
Other than the label, and the fancy shrinkwrap it comes in, these are for the most part identical to the main batch coming. (I have used high quality DVD-R's for these ones)
Real version $18us
Reasonable facsimilie $10us
Looking forward to seeing everyone there, I have a screen arranged for us, and am expecting to be pulling into Cleveland around 2-3pm Sat.
I can be reached on my cell phone at 519.520.1548 during the weekend.

Who needs a break? Ride until you drop, the last man standing wins. ;)
Brian, thanks for making the home copies of the DVD. Sounds like a good option for me. I'm anxious to bring a copy home to show to the riders in our local group.
By the way, I'm bringing 2 other riders with me. This will be their first uni event. They will have great time!
Thanks for planning this release party. Looking forward to seeing old friends and making new ones.

My weekend plans...
- arrive in Cleveland on Friday afternoon
- ride at Ray's on FRIDAY night (starting at 4 PM when they open)
- ride and hang out at Ray's all day SATURDAY
- leave Sunday morning by 10 AM
In the past I may have said I would ride at Ray's on Sunday, but my plans have changed. I certainly encourage others to squeeze in another great day of riding by going to Ray's on Sunday too!
Will anyone besides HCR be at Ray's on Friday?
What are the dinner (supper) plans on Saturday? When? Where? I can fit four passengers in my car assuming I can leave my unicycles stashed at Ray's.
What festivities, if any, am I going to miss on Sunday?
See you there! I can't wait!

Dave can I use your totally sweet coker for the rolling trials competition?
Tim, Jim, and myself will be showing up at Ray's at around 7 or 8 pm (possibly earlier if we leave before 12).

That's great guys, thanks for making that extra trip!
Just a reminder...
our rental starts at 10pm
if you are only coming for our thing, they will let you start riding at 9pm. If you want to ride earlier than that, you will need to pay the day fare of $13. You are able to come in for free if you are only spectating and hanging out until 9 though
See you guys there!

Thanks everyone for coming out!
Ray's is a very very cool place, and I intend on making more trips there, PM me if you want to throw around some dates to go riding there, it's the happiest place in the land!
It was great seeing everyone again, and getting to meet yet another handful of riders!
Thanks to Andrew for setting up the Rolling Trials event, what a cool idea.
