View Full Version : Gallery of personal greetings from around the world

Here is the next version of Unicyclist.com reality galleries.
I thought it would be fun to hear greetings from unicyclists to unicyclists from around the world. So I set up a gallery at http://gallery.unicyclist.com/greetings to which you can upload your personal greeting to the rest of us. Be sure to include your forum name so we know who you are and your location either in the recording or in the caption beneath.
Once you upload a greeting, let us know here in the thread so we can go listen to the dulcet tones of your voice.
Have fun.

Was thinking about this last night so I thought I'd bump it to see if I could generate any interest.
It's a simple concept, record a greeting then upload it to the gallery. We'd love to hear what your voice, dialect and accent sound like.

Great idea.

This came up in the Compliment thread so I thought I'd bump it again.
In looking at the greetings uploaded to the gallery, it's interesting that Kristine is the only female to post but for some reason far and away has the most views.

on the left it says "add item" just as if adding to your own gallery, its public.
Mmm, I was getting all ready to record a new greeting when I realised it was the same gallery.
I'd like to see a couple more in there.
Would love to hear Mikefule read one of his stories.

I've always wondered what different types of British dialects there were. In the U.S., there are definite accents that are characteristic of different parts of the country. I have to think that it's the same in the U.K., but for now, most British accents sound the same to me. I just haven't been exposed to the speech enough to tell the difference. Also, I can imitate the different accents from around the U.S. but the British accent is very difficult for me and I'm not sure why. Probably for much the same reason, I haven't heard it enough.

you do have an accent. its kinda wierd, not as weird as some of the others though.
I'd like to suggest a fixed script for everyone to incorporate in their recordings.
That will help alleviate the problem of 'not knowing what to say' and also make it more interesting to hear the different pronunciation of the same words by people from different countries.
The University of Otago did a similar stu (http://www.otago.ac.nz/anthropology/Linguistic/Sounds/Sounds.html)dy and used this script:
"Dear Mum and Dad: Hi! How are you? Well, here I am in the big city. Although the weather is nice at the moment, the forecast is for hail, but that should soon clear. I bought a new coat yesterday because they say it gets really cold. I have to stay at Aunty Deb's house for now, but I'm hoping to get a flat soon. The trip up was great, even though it took ten hours. Well, I must go. You know how rarely I write, but I will try to do better this year. Love Clare / Clark
Thoughts?

Have that as a start and then do the script in my post above?

yup, that should give us some idea on accents and pronunciation on funny words.

The script is a good idea but I also would appreciate a greeting as it makes it a little more personal. Since we already have a greeting posted outdated as it may be, I'll see if I can record and upload the script sometime.

I think we would prefer it in English as it would be difficult to sense an accent in a recording spoken in an other-than-English native language.

hahah ambadicata sumhow translates to andrew carter hmmmmmm thats odd lol:D
The Austalian accent would pronounce something like Andrew Carter as "Aandr' Kaadah".
Phonotically, ambidacata is actually a pretty accurate rendering.

Unless you're Steve Davis and you say things like:"Well, he's snookered behind the green ball. For all our viewers watching on Black-and-White televisions, the green ball is the one directly next to the yellow ball."

I'm going home tomorrow and then I'll finally be ble to hear all these
We probably don't have the nice recording equipment that Dave has but we did our best.
Yeah, you desperately need to use a vocal compressor on the vocal track before adding the FX. You also needed to cut an EQ groove out of the backround sounds so you'd have a natural frequency range for the voice to sit in, as opposed to on, the sounds.
An intelligent maximiser would've done wonders for the integrity of the mixdown and any half-decent final mastering processor would've cleared up a lot of the muffling of the final product and a parametric equaliser would've reduced some of the digital icing you have on the higher frequencies.*
It's a disgrace.
Do better next time.
Better yet, send me the original tracks and I'll show you how it's supposed to be done.
*
PS. I don't actually know what most of that means but my boss seems to like it if I throw stuff like that around in conversation.

The little stick mic Gateway provides is not very good, so we routed my 100W acoustic amp into Ben's computer and used my good quality mic into the amp. Ben's got a wave editing program that did a pretty good job and gave us lots of options. I'll pass your mixing suggestions on to Ben to see what he thinks. I'll tell him you said that he should understand all the jargon. :)
Ben has the interest in such things, a good musical ear, and the ability. I think he could have a good career in audio engineering someday.
Link him to this sit (http://www.rane.com/par-p.html)e.
It's a pretty handy dictionary of audio-terms.
Also some kewl stuff to have a look at her (http://www.earlevel.com/Digital%20Audio/index.html)e.
And for a bunch of free VST-plug ins, go he (http://www.voxengo.com/downloads/?highlight=soniformer#soniformer)re.
If he's interested, two things.
Make sure he keeps his hearing.
-No loud music thru bad headphones.
And play, play, play.
Make stuff like that clip you just made all the time.

Then we can all go out and harrass them in other threads untill they record their greetings and tick them off the list.
I'll start the list, please add to it the people you'd like to hear, and keep copying and pasting the list as we start crossing people off.

It should offer you an option to 'Save As' from where you can select MP3.
Failing that, any one of a bunch of free audio convert (http://www.google.co.za/search?hl=en&q=free+audio+converter+aif+to+mp3&btnG=Google+Search&meta=)ers will do the trick.

In my education philosophy class, my group partner and I recently put on a presentation of one Mr. John Locke as an assignment. My partner is the chief photographer of 23 Action News in Rockford so he had just a few resources available to him. Here's a spot that we used during our presentation. In the spot, I play John Locke and my presentation partner, Matt, plays the reporter. We shot the interview in my living room.
