I currently have 10 gmail invites at my disposal. If you want one, all I ask is that you tell me why you were a good boy/girl this year, and your current email address. I'd be more than happy to give one to a unicycling comrade. What's better than giving the gift of a great email service?

And check people post hisotry, last time when we were all giving them out people signed up for accounts and made one post just in the gmail thread to get an account. They're really not that special! They're good, but why would you bother signing up to a forum just to get one.

Thanks Catboy... I'm going to forward my catchall gilby.com email to it and see how well it does with the spam... which is what most of it should be as I haven't seen a real message for me in there for a long time. It gets about 1500 messages a day. We'll see how it goes.

So far, it's all in the spam bin. 67 now.

1 GB isn't going to be enough.

I also have recently been given 10 more invites by the Gmail team. Seems that these days it's easy to find yourself a Gmail account, as it should be. :)

That will be an interesting test Gilby.

I've just started getting spam in my 'carter.andrew' Gmail account. It picks it all up fine, but I liked it when it didn't even need to be picked up because it simply wasn't there. :)

I think google does the invite method to prevent spammers from registering too many accounts. If they could create an unlimited number of accounts, they could easily abuse it too easily. But if they had to create accounts from invites, they are limited in the number of accounts they can use.

Totals thus far:
773 total messages.
3 legitimate emails (unimportant website notification stuff).
1 of the legitimate emails was marked as spam (notification of a guestbook entry on gilby.com, which was a spam guestbook entry).
All but 5 spams was marked as spam.

So, that's a 33% false positive rate, so far, but it learned to put the guestbook stuff in the inbox after I marked that one as not spam. Can't really blame gmail though as the contents of the guestbook notification was spam, but I still need to get that in my inbox.

So this test so far is not telling us much as there isn't supposed to be true ham in it. So I'll forward in my old email address to it which does still get a few legitimate emails (still 99% spam though). Or you could also email me at gmail.spam.test@gilby.com to see if it gets through.

Since I'm the newbie here...

I would like to say that I've been good cause I'm learning to uni, even if everyone I know thinks it's dumb. Getting pretty good too!

Fell free to send me an invite, but give them to the regulars first if you'd like.

Thanks!

Catboy. My email is unicycleboy@hotmail.com. I've been a good boy this year because I discovered unicycling - a wonderful and exciting sport; I shelled out £135 for my lovely nimbus trials uni and last of all because I can hop 1 foot high! OK maybe the last one's not so good but please, please, please send me an invite!

Gilby,

This is very interesting. I signed up for and set up a Gmail account at Dustin Kelm's invitation and I have never logged on to check my account or as far as I know, not given it out to anyone or used it for website registrations.

I've just now logged on for the first time. I have 163 Spam emails in my account. Amazing!

A Google approach to email.

Gmail is an experiment in a new kind of webmail, built on the idea that you should never have to delete mail and you should always be able to find the message you want. The key features are:

*Search, don't sort.
Use Google search to find the exact message you want, no matter when it was sent or received.

*Don't throw anything away.
1000 megabytes of free storage so you'll never need to delete another message.

*Keep it all in context.
Each message is grouped with all its replies and displayed as a conversation.

*No pop-up ads. No untargeted banners.
You see only relevant text ads and links to related web pages of interest.

We sent you an email a while ago, because you now qualify for a new mortgage.
You could get $300,000 for as little as $600 a month!
Bad credit is no problem, you can pull cash out or refinance.

Really, sounds too good to be true.

Don't worry about it, I am just glad that I can give a few fellow unicyclists the joy of good email.
