Gmail Notifier. By far, the best. However you do need gmail to use it... But if you meant just a program to run email through then, I wouldn't know...

nonono thats not what im talking about.
i have gmail and the gmail notifier but i want a program like outlook express that you can control all of your mail with it.
gmail notifier only tells you when you get new mail.

For anyone considering Outlook (the full version, not the free one). My advice is don't, unless someone is making you. That is, if you're using it at work, this is not a good reason to use it at home. I learned.

Earlier this year, with much research and trial-and-error, I was eventually able to get years of accumulated (and sorted) email out of the non-compatible Outlook and into my Mac email software. A couple of weeks back I did the same thing with my contacts. The contacts weren't so bad, but I had to output them to a comma-delimited text file, then manually correct the resulting spreadsheet before I could map all fields into the new program.

I have heard good things about Thunderbird, and the price is right!

Meanwhile, call me stupid, but on the Mac I decided to use Entourage. This is Microsoft's Outlook equivalent for Mac. Now before you go calling me stupid-stupid, I checked. Entourage stores emails and contacts in *industry-standard* compatible formats. Email can be exported in the Mbox format, and contacts are relatively universal as well. So in other words I'm not "stuck" with it, like you would tend to be with Outlook. So far so good, and I've found a nice spam tool to work with it.
