View Full Version : POLL: should image sigs be turned off/on?

let's approach it democratically, shall we?
nothing like a bit of mob-rule in the guise of inclusive governance on a tuesday afternoon

this discussion (http://www.unicyclist.com/forums/showthread.php?s=&threadid=29989) eventually raised the possibility that gilby might step in and take decisive action
if u read the thread, u'll know where i stand
before anything like that happens, i thought it might be a good idea to find out where forum-users stand on this issue

do u think the image-in-sig idea is kewl and should stay?
or
do u find it irritating when u scroll past these banner-ad-wannabee sigs while u're trying to read the forum?

please vote and, if u r so inclined, share with us your opinion on this matter

I vote them off the forums.

With avatars and galleries, there is plenty of space to personalize your experience here with images.

Finding them in the forums is messy, annoying, and unnessecary.

They hinder the forum browsing experience, in my opinion.

Although, so do words like 'kewl' and 'u' :(

Uh... What images in what signatures? I don't see no pictures or signatures. :)

You can turn off the display of all signature lines. It's in the User CP >> Edit Options.

Course, I don't see my signature either. :(

For the record, I voted no images in sigs.

they look good but some are alittle big and just make extra work and effort for scroling down pages

Some of them are OK.....Trevor's is pretty cool. But other's get on my nerves.

I say turn them off, people have abused the right to put pictures in sigs making their sig larger than their post.

I like sig's in general, the pix should stay to avitars though. That or restrict their size to something that is like 60x200 so they are not so massive.

Sigs rock... an amusing quote or phrase can often be as good as the post. But I can keep my likkle modem perfectly saturated without having to download unnecessary pictures.

Bah, I say to huge great pictures in sigs, bah!

I thank $DEITY that you can't put embedded midi files into sigs...

I agree with Raphael. If you force people to turn them off it will prevent anyone coming up with a small image signature that may be cool. I am not fond of large image signatures, especially when someone posts little and often, filling up the screen with repeated images. I choose not to use a signature, and I also chose not to vote in this poll since there is no option of "Communicate with users who have annoying signatures and let them know you want it changed." I think that would be the best option, and if someone didn't comply after a reasonable request, then you could consider forcing them.
*Edit*
- ITEMNO530, can you please change your annoying swedish fish signature to something less obtrusive? It may have been fun for you once, but surely the novelty has worn off already.

I like the idea of having the feature available. Even so, just because it's available doesn't mean it needs to be used! Like others have already stated, small gifs are ok, the big ones not so much. I would say Trevor Schofield's is a 'big one', but that is one exception; I don't mind his. Most of the others of similar size (or larger) however should be dealt with ever so severely.:)

HandyAndy
2004-01-28, 06:24 AM
im not so sure its so easy to turn off, they use the [IMG] code so to disable them would disable all linked images wouldnt it?

toddw9
2004-01-28, 06:31 AM
HandyAndy, I will note that your sig has a small enough image that in my opinion is not a problem.

How do people feel about colourful and multi-lined (not too many though) signatures like mine? I don't want to annoy anyone. Please speak up if you find it irritating.

I voted against the image signatures...but I dont really mind.

Thanks,
Andrew

I like the idea of putting some avatar-like restriction on them. If it's small, I don't mind. I like the signatures, but if the images are too big, they just get annoying.
Remember the two characters dancing, one with a gorilla head? I think it was Jagur's signature for a while. That was great.

I choose not to use a signature, and I also chose not to vote in this poll since there is no option of "Communicate with users who have annoying signatures and let them know you want it changed.mainly because this isn't a nanny-forum,
because i doubt if anyone's feelings will be hurt by this discussion,
because i was curious to see how people felt about this issue, because i'd hoped that my phrasing of the questions would clearly indicate that i was not trying to be scientifically accurate but rather have some fun,
and, my personal favourite bit of fall-out from this thread, people are suddenly thinking about the fact that their use of the forum features (and the language, i'm not THAT thick-skinned) impacts on other peoples' enjoyment of the forums

with that achieved, i could truly not give a toss is someone included a lifesize pic of the grand canyon in their sigs
but if one more person talks in the moviehouse...

;)

onto my next poll...

Images in sigs add bandwidth load, both in the transmission over the net, and in the mind of the reader. Oh, and on the screen they take up space only to convey virtually nothing. I voted no.

I find it perfectly fine... it's unobtrusive, takes no time to download and is probably the quickest way to identify one of your posts if skimming through a thread.

Plus I'm intrigued as to how long it took you to make... :)

So now it takes me twice as long to read the forums as it used to due to downloading loads of random completely pointless images! Aaargh!!!

To vent my frustration, I'm going to post another picture that will take me ages to upload but all you lot on faster connections won't even notice! AAAAARGGGHHHH!!!!

i think they are ok but should be limited. i dont like to see a big actual sized bag of sweedish fish on my screen. though it was great at first it got old. thanks for changing it, i like the new one.

Robbie
2004-02-04, 08:04 AM
I think they should stay and people should be allowed to use them. But there should be limits to the amount images you can have, my suggestion is one unless you wanna use a smilie or two (no excessive use of smilies), limits to size I would suggest 300 x 150 and file size 30kb, this being so it doesn't take too long for the 56k'ers. But if anyone is having real trouble they might aswell just turn it off in the control panel.

Anyway, you should make a mod to monitor it, some sort of signature enforcer person, I'm sure there's people here who have been here for a while and are considered responsible enough and know what to do.

Lol, I dunno, I've seen some people that could handle the job quite easily.

Anyway, I hope you don't take away sigs and maybe consider an alternative like mine, just with rules.

i think most people got the message that it is an (unnecesary?) chewer of bandwidth and have resized accordingly

the basic sig was never part of the discussion
it was the image sigs
a concern was just voiced about the danger of this forum becoming, like so many other, a cyber-neonstrip where u had to squint to read the posts

that doesn't seem to be happening

:)
