During my childhood in the 60s and 70s it was on the table whenever we ate out at such places as The 2nd Ave Deli (2nd and 10th) or Katz's (Houston and Ludlow). It is a part of the history, folklore, and uniqueness of New York Jewishness.
Of course, very few children actually like it and it is, to be sure, an acquired taste. I don't drink it often, but do enjoy it on occasion. Most with whom I've shared it find it sickeningly sweet and disgusting; some can't even get past the concept well enough to try it. Their loss.
Perhaps like haggis or sweetbreads you have to have grown up with it to appreciate it.

Here is a link to some brief reviews of Dr Brown's beverages at BevNet (go figure):
http://www.bevnet.com/reviews/drbrowns
Interestingly they found Cel-Ray to be not overly sweet.
Note the review of Dr Brown's Cream Soda. They are correct. This is the benchmark by which all other cream sodas must be judged.

Celery soda!? Never would have believed it. Not to steer the thread, but as long as it is mildly on topic, if any of you ever happen into central Kentucky it is worth while to try out this weird local drink called Ale 8 one. You will think it is no big deal at first, but you will find you just want another for some reason and another and another. Then you will see these folks with no teeth left but they still have one in their hand. The habit is hard to kick. Fortunately you can order it if you are out of the Winchester distribution radius:

I wrote a song about it and recorded it professionally. It's really bad though. The lyrics are good, but the tune sucks out loud.
I dread to think what you might have been searching for to dredge up a thread from over a year ago about celery soda...?
I thought Gauss had returned for a minute. Alas, it was not the case.

Sure thing.
The original since
1869
It tastes so good
I must make it mine
For countless generations
It’s been all its own kind
Since my first taste
It’s been on my mind
Chorus
Dr. Brown’s original
Celery Soda
Dr. Brown’s masterpiece
Cel-Ray
Dr. Brown’s vision
Celery Soda
Dr. Brown’s original
Cel-Ray
Dr. Brown’s original
Cel-Ray
Taste of celery
And caffeine free
one hundred and forty
kilocalories (per 12 ounce bottle)
Kosher for Pesach
and yellowish-green
made from the extract
of celery seed
Chorus
Comes in cans or bottles
12 oz bottles and cans
They also make 10 oz bottles
Buy it while you can
People don’t seem to like it
They can talk to my hand
If I didn’t have Cel-Ray
my life would be bland
Chorus
Carbonated water
Sugar and/or high fructose corn syrup
Citric Acid
Extract of celery seed
with other natural flavors
Sodium Benzoate
and caramel color
all ingredients based
On a 12 oz bottle
unless otherwise stated explicitly
when it comes to recycling
oh why oh why
It seems for my bottles
I only get 5
But I get twice as much
If I’m in MI
So travel to Michigan
and go for the dime
Chorus
This isn’t product placement
Just a recommendation
This isn’t for money
or for a corporation
This is for the world
a formal declaration
This is for Cel-Ray’s
Globalization
Chorus
Not bad for a whole weeks worth of though (mostly on the tune).

Whoa, this is so weird but for some reason I saw this and had a distinct memory of the taste of celery soda in my mouth. Maybe I'm just insane but I have a feeling I've had this, probably at my Jewish grandmother's i (in New York) when I was really young. Weird.
Have you guys ever had Cheerwine (since 1917!)? My friend and I found it in a gas station in South Carolina. I've never seen it anywhere else.

It's actually really good. It's my prefered beverage. I ordered a 24 pack from online because I can't find it in local stores.

And it's really not all that healthy. No healthier than any other soda.
i was reminded of this thread last night
i'm on my way to the juggling club and i want to stop and pick up some take-away food on the way
i'm headig for a Wimpy to grab a cheeseburger and chips or something simmilarly inspiring
no parking at the Wimpy, so i keep cruising down the parking lot and find parking right in front of a chinese take away
being the kind of person who wishes upon stars, i took this to be a sign and waltzed in
i never remember what the chinese food is i like so i described it to the young lady
my 'pile of noodles and fried stuff' turns out to be 'chow mein'
'my chow'
i can remember that
i have a quick look in the fridge for something to drink and what should i see but...
yeah, a can of asparagus drink
wow, i read about that on the uni site
kewl
(work with me here, i hadn't figure it out yet, don't spoil the story)
i'll have one of those
just had enough cash for the meal and the drink
bad planning, and i wasn't going to put a fortune cookie on my credit card
is it bad luck to get chinese take aways and not get a fortune cookie?
oh well, it probably would've said something like
'They're going to start saying 'DUH!' where u live.'
because as i got in the car and started driving off, i remembered that this thread was about celery soda and not asparagus juice
oh well

my boyfriend loves Jones soda. We buy them here at the Bootlegger/Brody stores. Theyre ok, I dont find them all that spectacular myself (although my bf does...so it depends I guess). But what I really like is "Jones Fountian Classics" theyre really good.

Jones Soda is awesome! They recently hit the shelves at Target and you can get 12 packs there as well as the traditional bottles. I've got a 12 pack of Green Apple and a 12 pack of Strawberry Lime in the fridge right now. Just polished off a 12 pack of Berry Lemonade a few days ago! Good stuff.

My favorite is Reed's EXTRA Ginger Brew. Wiith the red cap on the bottle. It burns just enough.
