I don't know if the above link will die at 8:00 PM Pacific Time today or not.

Here is the caption for the photo:

Mountain biker Darren Butler takes an 8-meter fall from a bluff above Kamloops, B.C., while riding for a film crew preparing a television series on the sport on Tuesday Aug. 27, 2002. Butler, 25, who is an experienced mountain bike free-rider, was taken to the hospital in Kamloops with serious injuries following the crash. Yikes, it does look like his seatpost broke. He probably damaged the seatpost on the previous drop and the takeoff for this drop finally did it in. That has got to be a horrible feeling having the seatpost break approaching a big drop and knowing that you're about to bite it at the bottom of an 8 meter cliff.

On a serious note, I looked at that photo and got the same feeling I had when I viewed the shuttle blowing up...

Yah, my jaw dropped too when I saw the photo.

It said his injuries were serious rather than critical and I'm taking that as a good sign. He's a Norco sponsored rider. I've seen his name before, I'm just not sure if he is in any of the freeride videos that I have.

I hope he is able to recover and get back to riding.

MSNBC.com has the pictures of Darren in their "The Week In Pictures" section. <http://www.msnbc.com/modules/theweekinpictures/default.asp>

They have a series of about 8 still photos made in to a flash movie showing the fall from the top down to the bottom. It also includes audio from Darren and the photographer about the fall and his injuries.

He's doing a lot better than I thought he would be after seeing that first photo. He's got broken bones in his feet and heels, but his ankles and legs are OK.

He says his front wheel washed out at the takeoff. But his seat still looks like it's at a funny angle. I wonder if it was his seat slipping that caused him to loose control and result in the front wheel washing out.

anyone, well somone must of seen NWD 1, the begining with Bender doin the like... 40 or 50 foot drop,, would of hurt alot like this, if hed not of landed, bounced, and went over the handle bars. I would think that id rather crash on the bike right when landing than free fallin onto myh feet. or some part of the body. NWD has some nice big drops on it, with some not to perfect landings. lol but yes ouch a drop that big has got to hurt

What was he thinking? 1 thing he should be on a unicycle and 2nd why ty even that! Would Kris himself try that?

What injuries did he have?

'only' smahed up heels and feet. I say 'only' cause that's still pretty bad, but at least he has a spinal cord!
