  • Still learning how to ride... and stuck. Suggestions, please.

    Hi, all.
I am a 45 years old, non-athletic, slightly overweight woman, with poor balance who decided to make use of the unicycle I bought my son (at his request) but never got used . (Well, it actually got used until it flew across my front hallway and made a hole in our door...) Still not sure what possessed me to take on this challenge - but seemed like fun.

It is MUCH harder than I anticipated and I am afraid that I am not really progressing anymore.

I am having trouble leaving the wall. I can do a couple of rotations but the past few practices I do not seem to be improving and am afraid I have maxed out.

    My questions:

    1. Due to my schedule and lack of physical strength, I only practice about 20 minutes at a time, a few times a week. Is that too little to make any progress? So far, I have put in a total of about 5 1/2 hours.

    2. I find it hard to continuously pedal. Any tips on getting a smoother ride? I wonder if perhaps my seat is at a less than optimal height.

    3. By nature I am a risk averse person and I think I am afraid of real injury (though I wear a helmet, knee and elbow pads and some padding to protect my legs that were taking a beating). Any additional suggestions on how I can best avoid getting hurt when I leave the wall? Thankfully, I have only gone down to the floor twice. Otherwise, it is mostly the cycle flying across the room, banging a calf in the process.

I REALLY don't want to give up but I am afraid that my desire has exceded my ability.

    Suggestions?
    Thanks!
