None of this thread makes any sense.

I don't think the whole band wanted to be woken up, just Billy.

I was lost until I remembered the bad (terribly sh1tty) song that they did, called something like "september ends". It was a very emo-type song about crying and sleeping because nobody loves them anymore.

                Spoiler Warning!

Green Day's album American Idiot includes a song called Wake Me Up When September Ends. An interesting note about the song that I didn't know is that it is actually about the death of his father 20 years ago. His father died in September. The song makes more sense with that information. Further information about the song is in the Wikipedia link.

On the subject of Green Day's American Idiot album, I listened to it again recently and I now know why I have been so completely underwhelmed by the album. I have mentioned before that I have not been impressed at all by that album but couldn't point out a reason beyond the vague comment that it was just flat and lacked passion. The reason I don't like it is that the album has been mastered REALLY REALLY LOUD. Louder than most. They compressed all the dynamic range out of the songs. No wonder it is so flat and uninspiring. They killed it in mastering. It is actually difficult for me to listen to the entire album on headphones because it just assaults the ears.

More info about the trend to master albums REALLY LOUD in this post: Everything Louder Than Everything Else.

Sigh. It could have been a good album. But as it is, I cannot listen to it. It did win a Grammy for best rock album in 2005. I guess they don't consider proper mastering to be a qualification for best album.

Did you come to your realization before or after you read this article that's been making its rounds through the media lately?

I listened to American Idiot again after reading that article to check if American Idiot was an excessively loud CD. It is.

I have known about the loudness war before reading that article. I have a link to the Wikipedia Loudness war in my audio bookmarks folder. I have been known to read Hydrogenaudio and Stereophile. The information in the article wasn't new to me, but it did prompt me to listen to American Idiot again to see if it was overly loud and overly compressed.
