There is a lot that you can do to trim the bloat. I'm sure you've taken all those measures on your Linux machine.
I've done it before for my parents, but every few months it seems that it's back. I'm also trying to ween them off me a bit... During the school year I'm 3 hours away My father will never learn how to admin the machine, but if it gets bad enough my mother can do it, being a very computer literate person... My main contribution was installing Mozilla and telling them I'll never fix it for them if they use IE

Right now my laptop is not optimized. The kernel is the stock 386 kernel, not the one optimized for Pentium IIIs. I'm too lazy right now to optimize

I keep my start menu at the top, and that bug still exists in XP. Luckily it's a rare occurance and easily fixable (though slightly annoying).

I made that one. Here is a .zip (about 18K) with all of my uni pointers, for anyone who wants them. They are a bit primitive, but hey, they're free. Some animated, some static. The .txt file explains what they are.

All brontosauruses are thin at one end, much MUCH
thicker in the middle, and then thin again at the
far end. That is the theory that I have and which
is mine, and what it is too. - Ms. Anne Elk

I finally got around to making a theme file for my Windows desktop configuration. It has my custom colors and the desktop picture that I'm currently using. My colors aren't going to be for everyone, but I really like them. They're easier on my eyes than any of the stock color themes. I'm not a big fan of black text on a white screen. It's too harsh on the eyes and I spend too much time looking at computer screens.

The theme file is in my Miscellaneous Stuff gallery down at the bottom of the page. Direct link here: JC's Windows Theme

Lol, its taken me months to realise that James Potter has a picture of me on his desktop! Yay, that makes me feel so happy (even if it isn't still true).
It also says a lot for my skills of observation.
