Agree on the second sentence. But on the first sentence, I'd have to nominate Goodbye Yellow Brick Road for the last overall good honor. It came next chronologically after Don't Shoot Me, and in my view was still a major album. There are some duds on it sure, but as a double there were some home runs too. Love lies bleeding, This song has no title, Jamaica, I've seen that movie too, Sweet painted lady, and my fave, Roy Rogers.

Not to mention the album design and artwork, which was also well beyond the standard and took full advantage of the format. I love CDs, but fact is you won't see anything like YBR in 5 x 5 format. It was a treat to spread that baby open...

But back to Roy. Time to head for the Sennheisers for a dose. My favorite passage on the album seems particularly appropriate tonight:

"Lay back in my armchair, close eyes, and think clear
    I can hear hoofbeats ahead
Roy and Trigger have just hit the hilltop
While the wife and the kids are in bed
Tom Blackwood is like a shadowy figure behind a 36" tree...

Tom, can you hear hoof beats!

EJ definitely had some stinkers after YBR with some good songs mix in. I made the mistake of buying Captain Fantastic, talk about bizarre album design and artwork.

I think YBR was one the biggest hit albums of my high school days. My album jacket says 1973, was it really that long ago? We had that thing memorized so well that 10 years later a few of my HS classmates and I were hanging out on the boat anchored off my friend's beach party. We played the entire tape and didn't miss a note. My girlfriend of the time was a few years younger than us and just didn't make the same connection.

Music makes powerful connections. When I try to remember when a song came out it almost always linked to the memory things I was doing when that particular song was new or popular.

Tom, I thought that YBR came out after but I hastily checked an Elton John discography site and they listed YBR before Don't Shoot Me. That being the case I completely agree with you.

I saw Elton John at Madison Square Garden during the tour that John Lennon sang Lucy in the Sky with Diamonds with him. Of course, I was at the show the night after that happened.

i guess some of these comments belong here, but since this brings us full-circle, again, i thought i'd stick it in here

while i personally thought the 90sec version sucked, i was quite impressed to see Free Bird on a Grammy stage

as i was impressed with a variety of the Lifetime Achievement Awards they handed out last night
especially, obviously , getting Kristofferson to present the LAW to Janis Joplin
followed by a really kewl musical tribute
i thought Joss Stone showed her age by just trying a little bit too hard (mmm, i only noticed that when i reread the post. it wasn't intended )
i really like her stuff but i think she needs a couple more broken hearts and broken bottles before she covers joplin again
i guess i'm just being nit-picky because i did enjoy her version of Cry Baby
i've always thought (and don't shoot me) that PINK could hold her own as far as Joplin covers go
and i'm not ashamed to admit that when melissa etheridge swung into the first chorus of Piece of my Heart, a lil' tear ran down my cheek
followed, with movie-like precision, by one from the other eye when she screamed that trademark soulcrushing/joyous release scream just before the final chorus
          this freaked out the girlfriend
she spent the rest of the evening convinced that ray charles was only winning all the Grammys because he's dead
i tried to point to a stupendous career, but i had no credibility left at that stage

          can't wait for the oscars

while thinking about this post in the car on my way to the office this morning (am i the only person in the world who thinks about forum-posts while stuck in traffic?), i realised that this would be my second ref to 'tearing up' in this thread and that for a person who spent a stupid amount of years not crying once, i seem to have turned into a regular waterworks - then i figured that if music can't move u, u're doing it wrong

even PPS'er: if anyone can point me to a place from where i can download the video of that Joplin Tribute performance, i'd be mighty appreciative

I thought Joss sounded great, but her mannerisms pissed me off as did her $1000 "pyschedelic" dress. Etheridge can do no wrong.

                      Oh come on.

If it's important enough for MSN to put this on their front page you can at least look at their list.

I think this one is a lost leader (not loss leader). Do you think anyone would pay a buck to download mullet music?

Whew! Dodged a mullet there. I don't own any of the music in that list. I was worried that I might have the Ratt song, Motley Crue song, or KISS song on a metal compilation disk, but fortunately those songs are not on it.

That is really sad. I feel for his family.

                            But I still can't resist:

If it had just been a Slow Ride instead of a fall he'd still be a Fool for the City.

BTW, says he was a guitarist.
